Rebounding decisive in Valley sectional loss to Wawasee

Perkins, Cumberland, Leasure all score in double figures for Vikings

Boys basketball

Wawasee 53, Tippecanoe Valley 48 (Tuesday): Dawson Perkins scored 11 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, but the Valley boys basketball team lost to Wawasee in a Class 3A, Sectional 21 quarterfinal at West Noble Tuesday.

Nolan Cumberland also had 11 for Valley. Paul Leasure had 10, and Brendyn Stump had nine.

Leasure had a team-high three assists.

Caden Welty made all four of his 3-point attempts and led Wawasee with 16 points. Keaton Dukes, who scored 27 against Valley four days earlier in their regular season meeting, added 13 and a team-high six rebounds.

Wawasee held a 23-14 rebounding advantage, including an 11-3 edge on the offensive boards.

No Valley player other than Perkins had more than two rebounds.

Wawasee made more free throws (16) than Valley attempted (7).

Wawasee won their fourth straight game to improve to 12-11. Wawasee coach Jon Everingham was the Argos coach from 2006-08.

Valley is 0-3 against Wawasee since beating them in the 2019 sectional final. Valley is also 0-3 in their last three state tournament games.

Middle school girls basketball

TVMS 47, Manchester 32 (8th grade, RRC championship, Saturday)

Mackaylie Costello scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds for the TVMS eighth-graders as they beat Manchester in the Running Rivers Conference championship game Saturday.

Lydia Craig added 11 points, Emma Patrick had six, Maddie Thompson had six, Carlee Snyder had five, and Bailey Bussard had two.

Thompson had five rebounds, and Snyder, Bussard and Patrick grabbed four boards each.

Valley reached the final with a 12-point win over Southwood earlier Saturday. Costello had 12 points and seven rebounds to lead the Lady Vikings. Craig and Patrick had six points each, Wagoner and Snyder had four points each, and Bussard had one.

Thompson had four rebounds, Snyder and Bussard had two rebounds each, and Craig and Wagoner had one rebound each.
