Adam Berry will coach the Pioneer varsity girls basketball team, and David McWherter will coach the JV, pending school board approval. This is according to a school press release that was distributed Monday.
This will be Berry’s second stint as Pioneer coach. He also coached the team to a 2-20 record in 2015-16. He had been an assistant coach on Jeff Brooke’s staff in 2022-23.
He also guided and directed Pioneer Junior High girls basketball teams from 2012-14 and 2019-22.
Berry has also spent the last seven seasons as Pioneer football coach, winning Class 1A state titles in 2017 and 2018.
In addition to being the JV coach, McWherter will also be Berry’s varsity assistant. McWherter’s teams compiled an 11-69 record during a four-season run as Pioneer’s coach from 2011-15.
He also has 16 years experience coaching boys basketball within the Pioneer schools.
Berry replaces Jennifer Burns, who stepped down last week.
Burns was hired at a May 9 school board meeting to replace Brooke after Brooke stepped down following a seven-season run as coach on April 5.
Burns then stepped down Oct. 31.
Pioneer opens its season with a home game against Clinton Central at 6 p.m./7:30 p.m. (JV/Varsity) Nov. 14.
