Blickenstaff, Cripe lead Pioneer to semistate volleyball title

Next up: vs. Loogootee, 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Muncie for state championship

Volleyball

The Pioneer volleyball team swept Cowan 25-16, 25-17, 26-24 in the Class 1A north semistate match at Lafayette Jeff Saturday.

Madison Blickenstaff led Pioneer with 18 kills. Hailey Cripe had 12 kills and 14 serves received. Mackenzie Walker had 17 digs and 27 serves received. Olivia Brooke had 28 assists.

Gracie Conway had 23 kills for No. 4 Cowan. Jascey Harrington had 10 kills, 10 digs and 15 assists.

No. 3 Pioneer advances to the state championship match, where they will play No. 2 Loogootee. Loogootee defeated Hauser in three games to win the south semistate.

Pioneer has defeated No. 5 Northfield, No. 7 Kouts and No. 4 Cowan during their state tournament run.

The semistate title is Pioneer’s second in three years. Pioneer defeated Covington in the 2018 semistate before falling to Barr-Reeve in the state championship match.

The Pioneer-Loogootee state championship match will start at 10:30 a.m. this Saturday at Worthen Arena, 2000 W. University Avenue, Muncie.

It’s the second time in less than nine months that Pioneer and Loogootee have met for a state title. Loogootee edged Pioneer 45-43 on Feb. 29 in the Class 1A girls basketball state title game.

Pioneer’s first two girls basketball games postponed

Pioneer’s first two girls basketball games have been postponed due to the success of its volleyball team.

Pioneer was scheduled to play at Tri-County Saturday and to host Southwood Nov. 10.

The Tri-County game has not been rescheduled. The Southwood game has been rescheduled for 6:15 p.m./7:45 p.m. (JV/Varsity) on Jan. 14.
