ARGOS — Elizabeth Frias, Camila Jimenez and Avary Malcom each scored a goal for the Bremen girls soccer team in a 3-0 win over host Argos Saturday.
The game was both senior night for Argos seniors Carlie Rex, Micah Heckaman, Lilly Hines, Lanie Masters and Alanna Horvath and a sectional preview.
The teams could have a rematch in the Class 1A, Sectional 35 final, which Argos will host on Oct. 7. Argos eliminated Bremen in an overtime thriller in last year’s sectional semifinals and went on to win their fifth straight sectional title.
Bremen is No. 17, and Argos is No. 19 in this week’s Class 1A coaches poll.
Bremen led 2-0 at halftime.
Both teams had 13 shots on goal.
Bremen is 9-4-1, and six of their wins have been by shutout. Meanwhile, Argos (5-8-1) has not scored in three of their last four games.
“Bremen came out and totally dominated this game, and they earned that win,” Argos coach Joe Stone said. “I’m so happy for them. I really am. They earned it. They pressured us. They went to every single ball. They won every single ball. They attacked with pace. It’s something that we’ve been begging the girls to do but can’t get them to do it.”
Hines is the three-time reigning RTC girls soccer player of the year. She was coming off a hat trick in a 6-0 win over Oregon-Davis two days earlier.
But Stone said she needs some help.
“Lilly’s a great player, but she can’t do it by herself,” Stone said. “When nobody else steps up with her, she can’t do it all unfortunately. They had two or three girls marking her in the middle there, and we try to get girls up there with her, and my girls just stayed back trying to play defense.”
