Caston boys 2nd, girls 3rd at Lewis Cass 3-way meet

Caston boys 2nd, girls 3rd at Lewis Cass: The Caston boys track team took second and the girls third at a three-way meet at Lewis Cass that also involved Southwood Tuesday.

In the girls meet, Ali Paul was third in the long jump, and Bailey Turnpaugh-Stevens third in the 100 meters.

Emma Stinson was fourth in the 100 hurdles, and Delaney Strasser was fourth in both the 400 and 1,600. Hannah Kirisits was fourth in the 300 hurdles. Mackenzi Roudebush was fourth in the 3,200.

In the boys meet, Austin Dague was Caston’s only blue ribbon winner as he took first in the 3,200. Brady Evans was second in the 110 hurdles, and Edison Byrum was second in the 800 and 1,600. The 4 x 100 relay team of Chase Brault, Chase Angot, Ethan Amezquita and Jake Paschen and the 4 x 400 relay of Byrum, Corbin Smith, Evans and Dague also was second.

Evans was third in the high jump, and Kobi Martindale was third in the discus and shot put. Greg Brault was fourth in the long jump.

Paschen was third in the 100 and 200.

Smith was third in the 300 hurdles.

Angot was fourth in the 100.

Caston boys 5th, girls 6th at Winamac Invite: The Caston boys track team finished fifth and the girls team sixth at the six-team Winamac Invitational Saturday.

Winamac won the boys invitational with 154 points. Caston had 51.

Brady Evans was first in the 110 hurdles, second in the 200 meters and fifth in the high jump. The other Caston event winner was Austin Dague, who won the 3,200.

Corbin Smith was fifth in the 110 hurdles and sixth in the 300 hurdles.

Edison Byrum was fifth in the 1,600, and Bailey Collins was fifth in the 800.

Kobi Martindale was fifth in the discus and also scored in the shot put. Landon Shafer also scored in the shot put.

Greg Brault was sixth in the long jump.

Caston also scored a point in the 4 x 400 relay.

In the girls meet, Carroll won with 138 points. Caston had 33.

Taylor Shafer was Caston’s lone first-place finisher, taking the blue ribbon in the shot put.

Bailey Turnpaugh-Stevens took third in the 200 meters.

Emma Stinson was fifth, and Hannah Kirisits sixth in the 100 hurdles. Kirisits was also fourth in the long jump.

Other Caston scorers included Delaney Strasser in both the 800 and 1,600 and Mackenzi Roudebush in the 3,200.

Baseball

Wabash 5, Caston 0 (Tuesday): Joey Spin singled in the fourth inning for Caston’s lone hit in a loss to host Wabash Tuesday.

Sam Smith walked twice and stole two bases.

Kade Zeider allowed eight hits and four runs in four innings and took the loss. He struck out two.

Pete DuVall allowed one run over two innings of relief.

Wabash sophomore Andrew Dillon pitched a shutout and struck out eight.

Manchester 14, Caston 6 (Saturday): Carter See and Adam Rush had two hits each, and Joey Spin had a single, a walk and three RBIs, but Caston fell to host Manchester Saturday.

See added two RBIs.

Cam Kline and Jessie Rock-Wolf each singled.

Spin allowed 12 hits and 13 runs (12 earned) in 4 ⅓ innings and took the loss. He walked six and struck out two. Pete DuVall allowed no earned runs in 1 ⅔ innings of relief. He walked one and struck out three.

Darson Bradley had three hits and five RBIs for Manchester.

“Some days the ball doesn’t bounce your way or a call may not go your way,” Caston coach Blake Mollenkopf said in a statement. “We just need to do a better job of overcoming thos types of situations. Solid day offensively, but we committed five errors, which we cannot allow to happen.”

The second game of the doubleheader was rained out.

Pioneer 9, Caston 7 (JV, Monday): Caleb Stinson, Kagan Lee and Rowan Jellison each had RBIs during Caston’s five-run sixth inning, but the Pioneer JV held on for the win after building a 9-0 lead after five innings Monday.

Lee led with three hits.

Talon Zeider allowed six hits and four earned runs over five innings and took the loss. He fanned 10.

Caston 28, Winamac 11 (JV, Friday): Pete DuVall had four RBIs for the Caston JV in a road win over Winamac Friday.

Kagan Lee, Grant Yadon, Talon Zeider, Caleb Stinson, Ryan Spin and DuVall all had multi-hit games. Caston had 16 hits as a team. Lee had three hits.

Rowan Jellison allowed eight hits and 11 runs in 3 ⅔ innings for the win. Stinson threw 1 ⅓ scoreless innings in relief.

Caston scored 12 runs in the top of the first and added eight more in the third.

Softball

Caston 27, Culver 2 (5 innings, Tuesday): Caston bounced back after suffering their first loss against North Miami Monday to beat Culver and improve to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the Hoosier North Tuesday.

Kinzie Mollenkopf had five hits, and Maddi Smith went 3 for 4.

Addison Zimpleman had a homer and a triple. Isabel Scales singled and tripled. Eillie Deming tripled and scored three times. Annie Harsh doubled and scored three times.

Layne Oliver and Macee Hinderlider had two hits each.

Mollenkopf also got the win in the circle. She didn’t allow a run after the first inning and struck out seven.

Caston led 22-2 after two innings.

Maegan Pearl had a single and a double for Culver. Sylvia Rodriquez, Kaylee Hamilton, Kaitlyn Kanschat and Luci Overmyer each had a single. Kanschat and Overmyer each had a single.

North Miami 5, Caston 4 (Monday): Isabel Scales homered twice and drove in all four Caston runs in a road loss to sectional rival North Miami Monday.

North Miami scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to overcome a 4-1 deficit.

Lauren Duncan had two hits and three RBIs at the plate and also got the win in the circle. Taylor Tinney had an RBI and scored twice. Ellie Musselman had a hit and an RBI.

North Miami will host the sectional from May 24-29.
