Caston sports briefs: Volleyball sweeps sectional rival Lakeland Christian

Volleyball

Caston def. Lakeland Christian, 25-10, 25-18, 25-9 (Thursday): Layne Oliver had 15 points, and Addison Zimpleman had 12 for Caston in a road win over sectional rival Lakeland Christian Thursday.

Maddi Smith and Isabel Scales had five kills each.

Delaney Lowry led in assists, Abby Williamson led in blocks, and Maddi Smith led in passing, according to coach Melinda Shultz.

“This was a good win for us to end our regular season on,” Shultz said in a statement. We are still improving and building as we near sectionals, and the girls are excited to show the kind of volleyball we can play.”

Triton def. Caston, 25-17, 25-14, 25-22 (Tuesday): Isabel Scales had five points, Maddi Smith had six kills, and Abby Williamson had five kills and four blocks for Caston in a Hoosier North road loss to Triton Tuesday.

“We were able to learn and adjust as a team as we played,” Shultz said in a statement. “The girls improved and adapted during each set and fought to stay competitive.”

Caston goes 1-1 at home tourney (Oct. 3): The Caston volleyball team went 1-1 at their home tournament Saturday. They beat Oregon-Davis 2-0 and lost to North White 2-1.

Caston def. Knox, 25-22, 25-16, 25-27, 25-20 (Oct. 1): Isabel Scales had 15 points, and Maddi Smith had 13 kills for Caston in a Hoosier North win over visiting Knox Oct. 1. Abby Williamson had seven blocks. Isabel Scales had six blocks.

Rebekah Milburn led in assists, and Maddi Smith led in digs and serves received, according to coach Melinda Shultz.

“Overall, I’m very proud of these girls,” Mshultz said in a statement. “We came out strong and aggressive. In the third set, we got down but pushed back in it and pushed it to extra points. Even when we lost that set, we kept our heads and pushed through the fourth set as a team. We definitely missed more serves than I’d like, but we were able to put together a good team win tonight.”

Knox won the JV match 25-14, 25-20.

Carington Calisto and Ali Paul led the Caston JV with seven points each. Alexa Finke led the team in blocks.

North Judson def. Caston, 25-15, 25-17, 25-17 (Sept. 29): Isabel Scales had seven points to lead Caston in a Hoosier North home loss to North Judson.

Scales also led the team in digs, Rebekah Milburn led in assists, Maddi Smith led in kills, and Abby Williamson led in blocks, according to coach Melinda Shultz.

North Judson also won the JV match 25-14, 25-20.

Haley Logan led the Caston JV with six points and also led the team in setting, according to coach Melinda Shultz. Macee Hinderlider led in digs and serves received, Alexa Finke led in kills, and Tayler Shaffer led in blocks.

Caston def. North Miami, 25-19, 25-14, 25-14 (Sept. 28): Layne Oliver had 10 points, and Rebekah Milburn and Addison Zimpleman had eight points each for Caston in a home win over North Miami Sept. 28.

Abby Williamson and Isabel Scales had five blocks each. Maddi Smith led in digs, serves received and kills, according to coach Melinda Shultz.

“We might have started out a little slow and quiet, but then they got into it, got loud and started having fun and playing the kind of volleyball they know how to play,” Shultz said. “We were able to try some new things and play our subs, so overall, it was a good night for us.”

Caston and North Miami will meet again in a Class 1A, Sectional 52 quarterfinal at Pioneer Oct. 15.

In the JV match, North Miami prevailed 25-24, 25-14.

Julina Sherrick led the Caston JV with five points. Taylor Shaffer led in kills and blocks, according to Shultz.

Boys soccer

Caston 5, LaVille 1 (Sept. 29): Brayden Breed had two goals and two assists for the Comets in a Hoosier North road win over the Lancers Sept. 29.

Rowan Jellison and Alexander Hernandez had a goal and an assist each. Colby Pugh also had a goal.

“We continue to get better little by little,” Caston coach Narciso Sanchez said. “We had great success in possession of the ball today. The kids made good decisions and played well enough to beat LaVille for our first conference win this season. Overall, good game.”

The game was tied 1-1 at halftime.

Junior high soccer

Logansport 5, Caston 4 (Sept. 28): Jan Aguilar had a hat trick, and Arrik Miller also scored for the Caston Junior High in a loss to Logansport Sept. 29.

Myles Sherrick had three saves in goal.
