Caston sports briefs: Zimpleman pitches no-hitter in 5-inning win over Culver

Baseball: Spin goes 4 for 4 in loss to Wabash day after beating Manchester on mound

Caston 12, Culver 0 (5 innings, Tuesday): Addison Zimpleman pitched a no-hitter with no walks and 11 strikeouts and also went 2 for 2 with two runs scored at the plate for the host Lady Comets in a win over Culver in their Hoosier North opener Tuesday.

Isabel Scales added a pair of doubles. Kinzie Mollenkopf and Macee Hinderlider each had a single and two RBIs. Annie Harsh had a double and two RBIs. Haley Logan also had two RBIs. Bailey Harness and Makena Middleton each had a hit and an RBI. Maddi Smith had a single and a walk.

Caston scored nine runs in the first inning.

Caston committed two errors, which led to Culver’s only baserunners.

A.J. Hinds allowed 12 runs (six earned) over four innings and took the loss. She allowed 10 hits and walked two while fanning two.

Caston 14, North Miami 10 (Monday): Kinzie Mollenkopf had two hits and three RBIs, including a homer, and Isabel Scales had three hits and two RBIs, including a homer, as Caston rallied from a 5-0 deficit to beat North Miami Monday.

Macee Hinderlider added a double, a triple and three RBIs. Haley Logan had a single, a double and two RBIs. Maddi Smith had three hits and an RBI. Mollenkopf doubled twice and scored twice. Annie Harsh had two hits and two runs scored. Bailey Harness had a hit and a run scored.

Mollenkopf pitched a complete game and allowed 12 hits and 10 runs. She walked two and fanned five.

Caston committed five errors, but Mollenkopf yielded only one unearned run.

Freshman Ashley Sumpter-Music went 4 for 4, including a homer, for North Miami. Reese Hoover also homered.

Caston scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 10-7 lead. They added four more runs in the sixth.

Wabash 11, Caston 4 (Tuesday): Joey Spin went 4 for 4 with two RBIs, and Sam Smith had two hits and an RBI, but the host Comets lost to Wabash Tuesday.

Adam Rush went 2 for 2 with a single, a double and two walks.

Talon Zeider started for Caston and allowed six runs (three earned) over three innings. He walked three and struck out four. Jackson Rentschler allowed two hits and five earned runs in 3 ⅓ innings. Ryan Spin got the final two outs in the top of the seventh.

The game featured 20 walks, two hit batters and 23 strikeouts.

Wabash scored three runs in the first and never trailed.

Caston 2, Manchester 1 (Monday): Joey Spin pitched an eight-hitter with four walks and six strikeouts, and Caston scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to beat Manchester in their season opener Monday.

Talon Zeider had two of Caston’s five hits and drove in a run. Jackson Rentschler and Pete DuVall each had a hit and a run scored. Spin also had a hit.

Manchester did not score after the first inning. Caston tied the game in the third.

“Our guys showed a lot of toughness tonight against Manchester,” Caston coach Blake Mollenkopf said in a statement. “We played error-free baseball defensively and got a clutch pitching outing from Joey on the mound. Offensively, we did enough to put pressure on Manchester, and we were able to scratch out a pair of runs.”
