Deming’s dinger helps Caston down North White

Mollenkopf, Zimpleman combine on shutout

Eillie Deming, singled, homered and drove in four runs, and Isabel Scales had a double, a sacrifice fly and three RBIs to lead the Caston softball team to a 10-0 win in five innings over North White in a Class 1A, Sectional 52 quarterfinal at North Miami Monday.

Annie Harsh added a single, two doubles and two RBIs.

Kinzie Mollenkopf also had three hits and two RBIs at the plate and also pitched four

scoreless innings in the circle for the win. Addison Zimpleman pitched a scoreless inning and added two hits at the plate.

Maddi Smith and Bailey Harness each had a hit.

Already leading 4-0, Caston scored six times in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.

Caston improved to 22-3. North White finishes 11-11.

The win was Caston’s first in a sectional game since a 7-4 win over South Newton exactly five years ago (May 24, 2016). Caston has never won a sectional title in softball.

The Lady Comets will play Northfield in the semifinals at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Northfield upset No. 2 North Miami 4-2 in Monday’s first quarterfinal.

Caston dropped from No. 2 to No. 4 in the final Class 1A coaches poll of the season that was released Tuesday.
