Leighton Dodt

Pioneer junior Leighton Dodt ran a 16:19.7 at the Brownsburg boys cross-country regional to qualify for the IHSAA state finals.

Dodt finished 34th overall in the field of 246 runners and 15th among individuals on non-advancing teams.

The top five teams and the top 15 individuals on non-advancing teams qualified for state. Pioneer’s team did not advance as they finished 18th in the 26-team field.

Dodt’s margin was narrow as he beat out Western’s Aden Yeary, who ran a 16:20.4. Ben Davis’ Aboubakar Ibrahim was just 0.3 seconds behind Yeary in the stampede for the line.

Dodt is advancing to his first state finals. He won last year’s regional when the regional was held at Culver Academy and there were 16 regionals statewide and not the current five.

Other Pioneer runners included senior Carson Meyer, who was 75th in 16:59; freshman Dane Bowditch, who was 140th in 17:50; senior Jackson Baker, who improved his sectional time by 51 seconds and finished 171st in 18:14; freshman Jack Nance, who was 184th in 18:26; sophomore Elliott Cooper, who was 238th in 20:38; and sophomore Kevin Gluth, who was 246th in 22:14.

The other area runner in the race was Caston senior Edison Byrum, who chopped 45 seconds off his sectional time at Logansport one week earlier and ran a 17:15. He finished 92nd.

Meanwhile, in the girls race, Pioneer senior Violet Montgomery finished 39th overall in the field of 246 runners in 20:00. She finished 16th among individuals pon non-advancing teams in her final prep race. Herron’s Ruth Miller got the final individual state spot in 19:55.

Freshman Ellie Hines, the other Pioneer runner, finished in 208th place in 24:07.

The season for three Caston sophomore runners also ended: Camila Hernandez-Rios was 171st in 23:05, Alexa Lowe was 176th in 23:12, and Jaded Aguilar was 225th in 24:51.

Lowe was running in her second regional while Hernandez-Rios and Aguilar were running in their first.

Carmel won the boys regional title with 34 points, Brownsburg (99), Zionsville (113), North Central (Indianapolis) (137) and Avon (186) also advanced to state.

Carmel’s Tony Provenzano won the individual title in 15:12. The top 19 runners finished under 16 minutes.

North Central (Indianapolis) won the girls team title with 70 points. Carmel (88), Zionsville (144), Brownsburg (149) and Harrison (West Lafayette) (169) also earned state berths.

Indianapolis Chatard’s Julia Score won the girls race in 17:37.
