PERU – Maddie Nordman had two hits and five RBIs, and Jaylah Harlan struck out nine Rochester batters to lead the Peru softball team to a 9-3 win over the Lady Zs at the Tiger North Athletic Complex on May 16.
Peru improved to 12-8 overall and 6-2 in the Three Rivers Conference. Rochester fell to 8-8, 3-5.
Rochester trailed 2-0 after two innings but tied the game on Emma Howdeshell’s RBI double in the third and Maddie Heinzmann’s RBI grounder to short that was booted for an error in the fourth.
But Peru scored three runs in the fourth to go ahead for good.
With runners on second and third and one out, Nordman doubled to deep center to drive home Ila Johnson and Abby Martin. Nordman later scored on Karsynn Beattie’s RBI single to make it 5-2.
Nordman, who batted eighth in the Peru lineup, later added a two-run single as part of a four-run fifth. Lilly Bradshaw and Jaylah Harlan also had RBIs in the inning.
“I don’t know if it makes the losses any different,” Rochester coach Becky Lee said. “I mean, we live and we learn. We move on from here. There were things I think we could have executed that we didn’t today, but tomorrow’s a new day. We’ll move on, we’ll learn from it, and hopefully make the plays or get the at-bats that we wanted today that we didn’t.”
Rochester knocked out nine hits but also left nine runners on base against Harlan. Harlan struck out Sydney Haughs with two on to end the first, struck out Emma Sells with two on to end the fourth and got Mia Howdeshell on a grounder to short with two on to end the game.
In addition to Emma Howdeshell and Heinzmann, Coleman also had an RBI. Sells scored twice.
But Rochester’s 7-8-9 hitters went a combined 0 for 9.
Rochester had a 9-8 advantage in hits, but Rochester pitchers also walked five, and four of the walks came around to score.
“She did a really good job,” Lee said of Harlan. “I wish I knew a stat on it, but when she had 3-0 counts, she came back almost every time and either struck us out or got us into a groundout. She did a great job of throwing strikes, and even if she was throwing balls, she worked herself out of a jam. So hats off to her. She did a fantastic job.”
