Rochester senior softball shortstop Emma Howdeshell has the same batting average as the model of an airplane – .727.

And metaphorically speaking, with help from younger sister Mia in the circle, she piloted the high-flying Lady Zs’ past host Wabash 16-0 in five innings at Honeywell Park Thursday.

Emma Howdeshell went 4 for 4 to highlight Rochester’s 17-hit attack. She had a single, two doubles, a triple and a hit by pitch.

Sydney Haughs had three hits and three RBIs, and Kallie Watson and Aubrey Miller each had three hits and an RBI. Kylie Coleman had two hits and two RBIs, and Mylee Heinzmann had two hits and an RBI.

Mia Howdeshell pitched a two-hitter with one walk and five strikeouts. She also had two RBIs at the plate.

Rochester scored six runs in the first inning, giving Mia Howdeshell a cushion before throwing her first pitch.

“Jumping out early was big for us,” Rochester coach Jim Coleman told RTC in a postgame phone interview. “We felt coming in that if we could put some pressure on them by scoring early, it would help settle Mia down a little bit in the circle, which it did just that. She pitched a stellar game for us in the circle.”

Meanwhile, Emma Howdeshell, who signed a letter of intent to continue her softball and academic careers at Kalamazoo College Wednesday, carried the offense. She has 40 hits in 16 games.

“Emma has been consistent since day one,” coach Coleman said. “You know, our first game, way back when we played Triton, she has had the pedal down and has never let up. … Aubrey Miller did a great job making contact and putting pressure on their defense. When those two with their quickness can get on base for Kylie and for Syd and for Watson, it makes it tough on the defense.”

Rochester also scored single runs in the third and fourth innings and eight in the fifth.

Rochester improved to 12-4 overall and 6-1 in the Three Rivers Conference. They have outscored their seven TRC opponents 89-22. They went 5-0 on the road in the TRC.

Rochester has home games with Peru Monday and North Miami Wednesday. North Miami (6-0) is the only remaining unbeaten team in the TRC.

Wabash fell to 6-9, 1-6 TRC. The teams could meet again in the Class 2A, Sectional 37 final, which Rochester will host from May 22-27.
