Goddard’s 27 helps North Newton beat Delphi, earn semifinal game with Rochester

DELPHI –- Tyson Good scored 19 points, and Lewis Cass guard Tyson Johnson held Winamac leading scorer Russell Compton scoreless as the Kings beat the Warriors 38-22 in a Class 2A, Sectional 37 quarterfinal at Delphi Tuesday.
Good, a 6-6 sophomore guard, outscored the entire Winamac team 12-9 in the second half.
Tristin Miller came off the bench to score eight points before leaving after suffering an apparent cut above the eye with 31.3 seconds left.
Nolan Young hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter and scored six. Young’s second 3-pointer with 2:51 left in the first quarter gave Lewis Cass the lead for good at 8-7.
Trent Fox led Winamac with eight points. He hit a pullup 13-footer in the lane with 2:29 left for what turned out to be Winamac’s only field goal of the fourth quarter.
That got Winamac within 31-22, but Lewis Cass responded with a 7-0 run to close out the game.
Compton had scored in double figures in 11 of his last 12 regular season games, including a 20-point effort against Rensselaer in a 65-41 loss in the regular season finale Friday.
The one opponent in that 12-game stretch against whom he did not reach double figures was Lewis Cass in a 48-41 loss on Feb. 13. Compton scored five points in that game.
Johnson, who played his first two prep seasons at Winamac before transferring to Lewis Cass in the summer of 2019, guarded Compton and held him without a point this time.
Compton scored 22 points in an 88-74 Winamac win over Lewis Cass in the 2020 sectional.
Ryan Gregor hit a 19-footer from the right wing on Winamac’s first possession of the second half, which cut the Lewis Cass lead to 18-15, but the Kings responded with a 13-2 run that spread into the fourth quarter.
Good had 10 of the 13 points during the run, including a 10-footer off a curl, a putback and a fall-away 18-footer from the deep right corner at the third-quarter buzzer that made it 28-17. He also went four for six from the foul line during this stretch.
After Fox’s basket cut the deficit to nine, Miller and Good scored on putbacks to extend the lead back to 13.
Beau Brandt added seven points for the Warriors (6-17), who finished the season on a four-game losing streak.
Brandt scored all his points in the first quarter as Winamac built a 7-3 lead. Winamac made all seven of their free throw attempts, including three straight from Matt Swartzell with 3:40 left.
Seniors Swartzell, Fox and Carson Bennett all played their final prep games.
Lewis Cass, who had lost six of their last eight regular season games, improved to 12-11. Lewis Cass will play Rensselaer (12-10) in the semifinals at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

North Newton 55, Delphi 41
Austin Goddard scored 27 points, and Griffin Swank added 10 for the North Newton boys basketball team in a 55-41 win over host Delphi in a Class 2A, Sectional 37 quarterfinal Tuesday.
The win was North Newton’s first in a sectional game since 2006.
North Newton, who improved to 13-9 and who has already clinched its first winning season since 2006, will play Rochester (16-1) in the semifinals at approximately 8:15 p.m. Friday.
Luke Smock scored 13 points to lead Delphi (3-15). Dawson Jordan and Peyton Roth added 12 points each.
North Newton outscored Delphi 11-1 from the foul line and limited the Oracles to one free throw attempt. The free throw disparity offset the Spartans not making a 3-pointer.
North Newton led by as many as 17 points in the fourth quarter.
Roth’s basket on the first possession of the second half cut North Newton’s lead to 25-22, but Swank answered with a pair of 15-footers, and when Goddard, North Newton’s 6-0 lead guard, garnered a 3-point play after a steal and nifty spin finish in the lane, the lead was up to 10 for the first time at 32-22.
Delphi would fight back to within five twice, the last time at 34-29 when Jordan scored on an air ball putback.
But Evan Gagnon worked a pullup with Michael Levy to get the lead back to seven, and a Goddard pullup 15-footer and a Gagnon back cut along the baseline for another layup made it 40-29 and led to a Delphi timeout.
Goddard scored nine points in the third quarter and nine more in the fourth. His two buckets to open the fourth made it 46-32, and Goddard made five of six free throws later in the quarter.
North Newton starts five seniors and got 49 of its 55 points from 12th-graders. The other six points came from Gagnon, a freshman.
Delphi led 17-16 on a pullup 12-footer from Cade Nelson with 4:05 left in the half, but North Newton responded with a 7-0 run.
Cade Ehlinger hit a free throw, Goddard hit a pullup 15-footer, Robert Domonkos scored on a driving banker and Gagnon hit a pullup 10-footer to make it 23-17. The lead was 25-20 at halftime.
Coincidentally, the team that North Newton faced immediately after winning a sectional game in 2006 was Rochester. The Zebras won that sectional final over North Newton 70-52 at Rensselaer on March 4, 2006.
This will be their second meeting since. Rochester topped North Newton 59-48 in a 2013 sectional quarterfinal.
