McKee loses by fall in first round

Competing in the Indiana High School Girls Wrestling state finals for the fourth time, Rochester’s Grace Hiroms finished third at 155 pounds at Kokomo High School Friday.
Hiroms defeated Madison’s Maylie Skinner by fall in 5:50 in the first round and Greenfield-Central’s Jasmine Camacho by fall in 3:52 in the quarterfinals. She then lost by fall to Eastside’s Rhaigyn Trenary in the semifinals by fall in 3:39 before rebounding to beat Monrovia’s Josie Hause by fall in 4:04 in the third-place match.

Hiroms also lost to Trenary at the Rochester semistate on Jan. 5.
Hiroms was the highest placing of three Rochester wrestlers who competed at state.
Laine Peppler, making her first state finals appearance, went 3-1 on the day and placed fifth at 145. Peppler edged Columbus East’s Eden Knight 8-6 in the first round to reach the quarterfinals. She then lost to North Montgomery’s Hailey Kunz 4-2 in sudden victory before recovering to pin Boonville’s

Paige Cook in 2:25 and New Palestine’s Ella Morris in 4:04. At 125, freshman Makenna McKee lost by fall in 1:00 to Southport’s K’yla Johnson in the first round and did not place.
Of the nine girls on Rochester’s wrestling team, only Hiroms and Amber Blackburn graduate.
