Brailyn Hunter had two hits and three RBIs, and Mia Howdeshell had two hits and two RBIs, but the Rochester softball team committed four errors that led to six unearned runs in a 13-11 loss to visiting John Glenn at Fansler Field Thursday.

The Lady Falcons carried a 13-9 lead going into the bottom of the seventh, but Mylee Heinzmann, Bria Rensberger, Howdeshell and Darah Strasser all singled off John Glenn pitcher McKenzie Timm.

Howdeshell and Strasser’s hits each drove in a run and cut the lead to 13-11. With runners on the corners, Strasser then stole second to put the potential tying run in scoring position.

But Timm recovered to strike out Aubrey Miller and get Aubrey Wilson on a grounder to first to end the game.

Wilson had three hits – two singles and a double – to lead a 16-hit Rochester attack. Heinzmann, Strasser, Rensberger and Miller also had two hits each.

Heinzmann, Strasser, Rensberger and Wilson had one RBI each.

Freshman catcher Jadyn Field contributed a single and an RBI.

“These girls will never give up,” Rochester acting coach Scot Howdeshell said. “I mean, they’re young, but they’ll never give up. We’ve just got to get away from making all these silly errors. That’s just what it is. If we can get past that, we’re going to turn it around. But it’s a process.”

Howdeshell started and took the loss, allowing 11 hits and 10 runs (six earned) in three innings. She walked six, hit a batter and struck out four.

Hunter relieved and allowed four hits and three runs (one earned) over the final four innings. She walked two and struck out three.

Rochester lost their third straight game and fell to 3-6.

Hunter had a two-run single and Rensberger an RBI single in the first as Rochester built a 3-1 lead, but John Glenn scored once in the second and eight times in the third to take a 10-3 lead.

Timm had a pair of RBI doubles in the inning, and Rochester also committed an error that allowed two runs to score.

Field, Heinzmann and Howdeshell had RBI singles as part of a four-run third to make it 10-7.

An error and a passed ball in the top of the fourth led to two John Glenn runs, but Wilson had an RBI double, and Hunter had an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to maintain the deficit at 12-9.

Brianna Wolff’s RBI single in the top of the fifth gave John Glenn a 13-9 lead.

Strasser was caught stealing third to end the bottom of the fifth.

Wilson singled with one out in the sixth but was stranded.

“They’re bunting well again,” coach Howdeshell said. “They’re hitting the ball. It takes everything to win these things. … Once we clean this stuff up, we’ll be fine.”

A three-inning JV game followed under the lights. It marked the first Rochester JV softball game since 2016.
