Local sports briefs: Villegas scores 5 goals, but Culver falls to Bremen

Culver volleyball loses at home to South Central

Girls soccer

Bremen 9, Culver 7 (Monday): Gisselle Villegas scored five goals and dished out an assist, and Kaylee Hamilton scored twice for Culver in a loss to host Bremen Monday.

Baleigh Binkley contributed an assist for Culver.

Caroline Bickel notched a hat trick for Bremen, who led 7-2 at halftime.

Culver scored four goals in the last seven minutes after falling behind 9-3.

The teams could meet again in Class 1A, Sectional 35, which LaVille will host from Oct. 5-10.

Culver 9, Peru 3 (Aug. 19): Baleigh Binkley, Kaylee Hamilton and Gisselle Villegas each had a hat trick for Culver in a home win over Peru Aug. 19.

Villegas also had three assists. Binkley, Eriahna Vela and Kenzie Banks each had an assist.

Culver led 5-1 at halftime.

The win marked the first for new coach A.J. Neace.

Argos 2, Kankakee Valley 0 (Aug. 18): Madisyn Barcus and Emma Dunlap each scored in a two-minute span in the second half for the Class 1A, No. 7 Lady Dragons in a season-opening win over Kankakee Valley Aug. 18.

Alyssa Poisel stopped three shots for the shutout, including a penalty kick in the 73rd minute.

Argos had an 11-3 advantage in shots on goal.

The game was scoreless at halftime.

Volleyball

South Central (Union Mills) def. Culver, 26-24, 25-13, 25-16 (Monday): Grace Sieber led Culver with three kills in a home loss to South Central Monday. Alina Pizur, Luci Overmyer and Maddie Shedrow had two kills each. Sieber also had three assists. Alina Pizur and Taylor Darnell had two aces each.

Caston goes 1-3 at Tomahawk Invite (Saturday): The Caston volleyball team went 1-3 at the Tomahawk Invitational at North Miami Saturday. They beat North Miami 2-0 but lost to Northwestern 2-0, Wabash 2-1 and Eastbrook 2-0.

The win against North Miami came in their first match against the Lady Warriors since losing to them in the 2019 sectional.

“By winning against North Miami, we were placed in a tougher bracket with some challenging teams,” Caston coach Melinda Shultz said in a statement. “We learned a lot during those games and were able to compete and challenge them. While we have some changes to make and things to work on, I saw a lot of good things on Saturday.”

Shultz said Layne Oliver had a team-high 17 points, including an eight-point run against Wabash. Maddi Smith led in kills, Rebekah Milburn led in assists, Addison Zimpleman and Kinzie Mollenkopf were the defensive leaders, and Abby Williamson led in blocks.

Culver goes 1-2 at John Glenn Invitational (Saturday): The Culver volleyball team went 1-2 at the John Glenn Invitational Saturday. They defeated Oregon-Davis 2-0, lost to John Glenn 2-0 and lost to LaVille 2-0.

Carroll (Flora) def. Caston, 25-8, 25-14, 25-14 (Aug. 18): Layne Oliver had five points for Caston in a road loss to Carroll in their season opener. Addison Zimpleman and Maddi Smith led the Lady Comets in serves received, according to coach Melinda Shultz.

Rebekah Milburn had six assists. Abby Williamson had three blocks. Smith had 10 kills.

Haley Logan - 9 points, Jules Sherrick - 7 points, Annie Harsh - 8 assists, Ali Paul - team-high in kills

Caston def. Peru, 25-18, 25-24 (JV, Monday): Alexa Finke had eight points, and Ali Paul had six points for the Caston JV in a home win Monday.

Jules Sherrick led in digs, and Annie Harsh led in assists. Tayler Shaffer led in blocks and kills, according to coach Melinda Shultz.

Girls golf

Marquette Catholic 220, Culver 241, Oregon-Davis (incomplete team), LaCrosse (incomplete team), South Central (Union Mills) (incomplete team) (Aug. 19): Alisa Jo Hinds led Culver with a 57 as the Lady Cavaliers took part in a five-team match at Hamlet Golf Course Aug. 19.

Kaitlyn Stacy added a 58, Sylvia Rodriguez had a 59, and Emmalee Hillman had a 67.

Marquette Catholic’s Mary Kate Bobillo was the medalist with a 47.
