Kinzie Mollenkopf and Addison Zimpleman combined on a two-hitter in the circle, and Mollenkopf also had three hits and an RBI at the plate to lead the No. 4 Caston softball team to a 17-0 win in five innings over Southwood in a Class 1A, Sectional 52
quarterfinal at North Miami Monday.
Annie Harsh had three hits, two RBIs and four runs scored, and Isabel Scales and Macee Hinderlider had three RBIs each. Maddi Smith and Addison Zimpleman each contributed two hits. Smith had an RBI, and freshman Makena Middleton had a hit and an RBI.
Mollenkopf pitched the first three innings. Zimpleman pitched the fourth and fifth. Each pitcher allowed one hit. Mollenkopf fanned seven, and Zimpleman struck out three.
Southwood pitchers allowed 13 hits and walked three. The Lady Knight defense also committed six errors.
Caston scored four runs in the bottom of the first and added five more in the second and third to make it 14-0.
Caston improved to 18-4. Southwood finished 7-17.
Caston will play North White (11-12) in the semifinals at approximately 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
In Monday’s first quarterfinal, No. 6 West Central blanked defending state champion Northfield 13-0 in five innings.
