Nelson’s hat trick helps Rochester rout North White

Sports Editor, RTC

Macie Nelson notched a hat trick, and Brooke Nelson added two goals for the host Lady Zs in a win over North White at the Brent Blacketor Memorial Sports Complex on Sept. 8.

Isabella Angeletti, Kendyll Bradley, Sydney Haughs, Aubrey Miller and Amy Williams added one goal each. The goal for Haughs, a senior, was the first of her varsity career.

Angeletti, Bradley, Mylee Heinzmann, Haughs and Williams each notched an assist.

Rochester built a 9-0 lead at halftime. The game ended with 20 minutes left, per the IHSAA mercy rule.

Melody Hisey had a shutout in goal.

North White was a substitute opponent. They filled in for Marion, who canceled their scheduled game.

Rochester improved to 2-4-1. The win snapped a five-game winless streak. The Lady Zs were coming off a 1-1 road tie against Oak Hill two days earlier.

“I think we were excited,” Rochester coach Chantal Rensberger said. “Obviously, we played the bulk of our really good teams at the beginning of the season. So we came off a 1-1 tie against Oak Hill, which put some momentum in our step. And then coming out today, with a home game, we haven’t had too many of those. I just told the girls this isn’t a conference game, we don’t normally play North White, they filled a spot for us because we were down a team this season, so let’s just go out and have fun and let’s score goals early and often.”

Rensberger said that after Macie Nelson got her hat trick that she sent her back to play defense to give other players a chance to play on the front line.

“It was nice to see the girls go out and just have fun,” Rensberger said.
