Pioneer’s Violet Montgomery won the Hoosier North girls individual cross-country title at Winamac Town Park on Oct. 1 in a personal best 19:44.
Montgomery beat Winamac’s Maggie Smith by 31 seconds for the win. Montgomery was fastest in a field of 44 runners.
Winamac won the team title with 25 points. Among RTC area teams, Caston was fourth with 103, Pioneer was fifth with 123, and Culver was sixth with 142.
Teammate Paula Fernandez, who finished 10th, joined Montgomery on the all-conference team.
Caston’s Mackenzi Roudebush and Alexa Lowe finished 13th and 14th, respectively, and made honorable mention all-conference.
In the boys race, Caston earned the conference title by winning a tiebreaker with Pioneer. Both the Comets and Panthers scored 51 points, but Caston had a sixth runner and Pioneer did not. Therefore, Caston was declared the winner.
“The entire Comets lineup ran personal or season-best times to make the championship happen,” Caston coach Blair Zimmerman said in a statement.
Caston and Pioneer were the only RTC schools that had complete teams.
Winamac’s Kolbey Wegner won the individual title in 15:55, topping a field of 40 runners. RTC area runners that made the all-conference team by finishing in the top 10 included Pioneer’s Leighton Dodt, who was second in 16:58; Pioneer’s Carson Meyer, who was third in 17:05; Culver’s Destin Green, who was fourth in 17:12; Caston’s Edison Byrum, who was sixth in 17:27; Caston’s Austin Dague, who was eighth in 17:40; and Pioneer’s Jack Cooper, who was ninth in 18:06.
