Pioneer sports briefs: Sweet pitches 3-hitter, but Pioneer falls to ranked Delphi

Girls, boys track finishes 2nd behind Kankakee Valley, Twin Lakes

Softball

Delphi 2, Pioneer 0 (Monday): Brayden Erickson doubled, and Caleb Sweet pitched a three-hitter, but the visiting Panthers lost to Class 2A, No. 10 Delphi Monday.

Sweet did not allow a run after the first inning. He walked six and struck out one.

Carson Workinger pitched a one-hitter with one walk and 10 strikeouts for Delphi, a defending Class 2A regional champion.

Track

Pioneer track finishes 2nd in 3-way meet: The Pioneer girls and boys track teams each finished second in a three-way meet against both Kankakee Valley and Twin Lakes on April 5.

In the girls meet, Violet Montgomery won both the 1,600 and 3,200 meters, and Michelle Harding won the 200 meters and placed fourth in the 100 meters.

Mackenzie Rogers took second in both the 400 and the long jump. Anna Shewalter was second in the 800. Makenna Strycker and Hayley Malchow placed second and third, respectively, in the pole vault. Blair Grigsby was third in the 300 hurdles.

All three relays finished second. The 4 x 100 relay consisted of Keirsten Nies, Michelle Harding, Grigsby and Rachel Harding. The 4 x 400 relay consisted of Shewalter, Grigsby, Strycker and Rogers. The 4 x 800 relay consisted of Shewalter, Strycker, Montgomery and Rogers.

In the boys meet, Jackson Baker won the 1,600 and accounted for a team-high 11.75 points, and Leighton Dodt won a 3,200 race in which Baker took second. Baker also was second in the 800. Dodt was also fourth in the 1,600.

Beau Mersch was third in the 110 hurdles and second in the 300 hurdles. Lincoln Alma was third in the discus and second in the shot put.

Carson Meyer was third behind teammates Dodt and Baker in the 3,200 and also took third in the 1,600. Brock Robinson was third in the 100, Cayden Hill was third in the 400, and Ryan Adams was third in the pole vault.

Final team scores were not made available to RTC.
