ARGOS — Kinsey Atkins scored 12 of her 14 points in the fourth quarter, and Addyson Viers also scored 14 to lead the Triton girls basketball team to a 40-36 win over host Argos at Phil Weybright Gymnasium Tuesday.
Jocelynn Faulkner added 11 for Triton, who improved to 3-0. Viers also had nine rebounds.
Emma Dunlap scored 12 points, and Samantha Redinger, Baleigh Binkley and Bella Stults added eight each for Argos, who dropped to 0-2.
Triton had 21 turnovers as compared to Argos’ 19, but in the fourth quarter, Triton had one turnover while Argos had seven.
Argos will now have to make do without Redinger, a junior guard and their leading returning scorer from last year. Redinger missed the final 7:38 with a wrist injury, and coach Scott Jennings told RTC after the game in a text message that Redinger suffered a broken wrist and is expected to miss four to six weeks.
“Without her in there, we struggled a little bit,” Jennings said. “Bella had three fouls on her. She had to kind of watch what she was doing defensively. I knew they were going to creep back in. It was just how quick were they going to do it, and could we hang on for a little bit?”
Argos started the second quarter on a 7-0 run to build a 23-9 lead, and they still led 33-25 after three quarters.
But with Redinger injured, Triton started the fourth quarter on a 12-0 run. Atkins, who scored on the first Triton possession and then did not score in the second or third quarters, drilled a 3-pointer with 5:38 left. A Faulkner 3 made it 33-31 with 4:35 left.
Binkley missed the front end of a one-and-one from the line with 2:17 left and then missed two more with 1:45 left.
Atkins dropped in another 3 from the right sideline with 1:32 left to give Triton their first lead since it was 2-0.
After an Atkins steal, Faulkner missed the front end of a one-and-one with 46.0 seconds left, but Viers flew in to force a held ball on a rebound effort. The arrow pointed toward Triton.
On the ensuing possession, Atkins was fouled and made the first free throws but missed the second. Viers rebounded the miss, and Atkins was fouled and hit two more free throws with 32.4 seconds left to make it 37-33.
Binkley hit a crossover runner in the lane to make it 37-35 and end the Triton run. Atkins split a pair of free throws to make it 38-35 at the 19.8 second mark.
Binkley was fouled with 9.9 seconds left and made the first free throw. Her second free throw was disallowed on a lane violation, and Triton drained enough clock before Atkins was fouled with 0.7 seconds left and hit two clinching free throws.
“There wasn’t anybody else I’d rather have at the line than her,” Jennings said of Binkley. “It just didn’t roll for her tonight. But she’s a heck of a player. The more she plays with this group, she keeps getting better every night in practice. She’s so stinkin’ quick. If somebody presses us, we can put the ball in her hands, and she’s going to make something happen with it.”
Triton started in a 3-2 zone defense but switched to a man-to-man for most of the final two-and-a-half quarters.
“It’s not good yet,” Jennings said of Argos’ man-to-man offense. “We’ve got some things we need to work on, especially when you’re rotating some new players. We lost a player this week and had to make some different arrangements a little bit last night, so we had to have some younger players step up. And they don’t quite get the offense yet and some of the screening that we need to do. It just didn’t gel. I give credit to Triton coming out in man because I thought they’d maybe stay in a zone. It affected us. It did, and we’re going to have to work through that.”
