RHS’ Beall wins 500 free at TRC, sets school record in 200 free

Valley’s Smith wins conference breaststroke title

Rochester junior Makenna Beall broke her own school record in the 200 freestyle and won the Three Rivers Conference title in the 500 freestyle at Maconaquah High School Friday.

Maconaquah won their fifth consecutive conference title with 349 points. Rochester was second in the six-team field with 269 points, and Tippecanoe Valley was third with 187.

Besides Beall, the other area TRC individual champion was Valley’s Makena Smith, who won the 100 breaststroke.

Rochester

Beall’s time of 2:02.51 in the 200 freestyle bested her time of 2:03.08 at the 2020 Warsaw sectional. However, it was not good enough to win the race as Manchester’s Josie Briner touched the wall in 2:02.46.

Beall did get a blue ribbon later in the 500 freestyle, an event in which she qualified for the state finals in 2019 and 2020, when she won in 5:34.19. RHS had three of the top five swimmers in that race as Ellie Shank was fourth in 6:14.34 and Zoe Seward was fifth in 6:35.47. Shank and Seward were also fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 200 freestyle.

Beall’s fellow junior Elena Bode was also among the top scorers for RHS, taking third in the 200 individual medley in 2:35.68 and second behind Valley’s Smith in the 100 breaststroke in 1:20.32.

Kendyll Bradley was fourth in the 50 freestyle in 29.25 seconds and fifth in the 100 freestyle in 1:06.12. Bella Riffle was sixth in the 200 individual medley in 2:48.40 and fourth in the 100 butterfly in 1:15.66. Elizabeth Swango and Madilyn Calloway were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 100 backstroke.

Bode, Bradley and Beall also formed 75 percent of the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays, both of whom finished second. Riffle joined that trio on the 200 freestyle relay while Shank joined them on the 400 freestyle relay.

Tippecanoe Valley

Smith’s time of 1:17.21 was good enough to beat the field in the 100 breaststroke by over three seconds. She was also third in the 100 butterfly in 1:13.38.

Shayleigh Honeycutt was second in the 200 individual medley in 2:34.29. Kendall Craig was third in the 100 freestyle in 1:03.77 and fourth in the 200 freestyle in 2:15.97.

Valley’s top relay was the 200 medley relay, which finished third in 2:14.67. That team consisted of Maddie Woodward, Smith, Honeycutt and Craig.

Meet notes

  • Maconaquah was the only school that had divers. Maconaquah had three divers, which gave them a 41-point advantage over the field before the meet even started.

  • Maconaquah won all three relays.

  • Manchester’s Briner sisters won four of the nine individual events. Josie Briner won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Halle Briner won the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke.

  • Maconaquah junior Kaylinn Teegardin won both the 50 and 100 freestyles.

  • The meet was closed to the public and moved from its traditional Saturday date to Friday in order to achieve greater social distancing. The girls meet is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday.
