Rochester sports briefs: Girls soccer, cross-country Tuesday postponed

Girls soccer

The North Miami-Rochester girls soccer game scheduled for Tuesday was postponed. No makeup date has been set.

Rochester athletic director Kevin Renie said in an email to RTC that North Miami was “low on numbers due to a variety of factors.”

Rochester has rescheduled their game with Peru for 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Peru. That game was originally scheduled for Sept. 23 but moved up.

The home game against Oregon-Davis scheduled for Saturday has been canceled.

Rochester will host Maconaquah at 5 p.m. Sept. 16 and Wabash at 5 p.m. Sept. 22 in makeups of earlier coronavirus-related postponements.

Kendyll Bradley and Haley Bunge scored twice each for the host Lady Zs as they won their first ever meeting with Valley Thursday.

Lilith Eaton had a goal and four assists, Emily Basham had a goal and two assists, and Kennedy Jackson, Macie Nelson, Brooke Nelson and Sydney Haughs also scored for Rochester.

Amy Williams, Basham and Bradley had two assists each, and Weaver, Kallie Watson and Lilly Watson had one assist each.

Kaillie Woods had one save in goal.

Rochester led 11-0 at halftime. The game ended with 20 minutes left, per the IHSAA mercy rule.

The game was played 10-on-10 in the second half.

half; Avery Prater had three saves in the second half.

Valley coach Mark Gordon is the father of Rochester coach Chantal Rensberger.

John Glenn 4, Rochester 1 (Aug. 14): Macie Nelson scored off an Emma Howdeshell assist for the visiting Lady Zs in a season-opening loss to John Glenn Aug. 14.

Hannah Thomas scored twice and dished out an assist, and Leena Thomas and Eliana Lang had one goal each for John Glenn.

Kailie Woods had 18 saves in goal for Rochester.

Cross-country

North Miami Invitational ppd.: The North Miami Invitational cross-country meet scheduled for Tuesday was postponed due to hot weather. No makeup date has been set.

Rochester and Caston were among those scheduled to compete.

Caston will run in the Cass County Meet at Logansport on Saturday. Rochester’s next scheduled meet is the Manchester Invitational on Sept. 4.

Boys soccer

North White 6, Rochester 2 (Aug. 17): Zach Pickens scored off an R.J. Keranko assist, and

Layne Backus added a goal on a penalty kick for the host Zebras in a loss to Class 1A, No. 10 North White at Brent Blacketor Memorial Sports Complex Aug. 17.

Parker Wallace had five saves in goal.

North White had an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal.

The game marked the debut for new RHS coach Elmer Roque.

Rochester will host O-D at 11 a.m. Saturday. The game has been moved up from 1 p.m. to 11 a.m. to avoid the forecasted hot weather.

Girls golf

Rochester 191, Manchester 246, North Miami 248, Southwood (incomplete team) (Monday): Ava Thomas shot a personal-best 39 for nine holes to claim medalist honors and lead the Lady Zs to a win in a four-way match against Manchester, North Miami and Southwood at Sycamore Golf Club in North Manchester Monday.

Payton Moore added a 46, Kat Rensberger had a 48, Delaney Barkman had a 58, and Savanah Eccles had a 60 to round out the Rochester team scorecard.

Rochester finishes 10th at Western Invite (Aug. 14): The Rochester girls golf team shot a 404 and finished 10th out of 15 teams at the Western Invitational at Chippendale Golf Course in Kokomo Aug. 14.

The field included three teams – Westfield, Noblesville and Western – that made the 2020 IHSAA state finals.

Payton Moore led the Lady Zs with a 90. Ava Thomas carded a 91, Kat Rensberger had a 99, Delaney Barkman had a 124, and Reagan Becker had a 125.

Westfield won the tournament with a 301. Runner-up Penn finished 42 strokes behind. Westfield’s Sophie McGinnis notched a 72 to earn medalist honors.

Boys tennis

Rochester goes 1-1 at John Glenn Invite (Saturday): The Rochester boys tennis team went

1-1 at the John Glenn Invitational Saturday and now stands at 2-1 on the season. The Zebras beat Knox 5-0 and lost to John Glenn 3-2.

No. 1 singles player Brayden Zink and No. 3 singles player Drew Strasser both went 2-0 on the day. Brock Bowers went 1-1 at No. 2 singles.

The No. 1 doubles team consisting of Tanner Reinartz and Cody Smith went 1-1. The No. 2 doubles team consisting of Robert Bozzo and Jake Freeman beat Knox, and the team consisting of Bozzo and Luke Hunting lost to John Glenn.

South Bend Clay did not participate, and the tournament was limited to three teams.

Matches consisted of one 10-game pro set.

Results: Rochester 5, Knox 0

Singles

Brayden Zink (RHS) won 10-2.

Brock Bowers (RHS) won 10-1.

Drew Strasser (RHS) won 10-0.

Rochester 4, Triton 1 (Thursday): Brock Bowers and Drew Strasser won at Nos. 2 and 3 singles, respectively, for the Zebras in a season-opening road win over Triton Thursday.

Bowers beat Damon Kuntz 6-2, 6-1. Strasser beat Caden Large 7-5, 6-3.

Brayden Zink lost to Connor Large at No. 1 singles. The players split the first two sets before Large won a seven-point tiebreaker to decide the match.

Rochester also won both doubles matches by default.
