Scales homers twice, Zimpleman fans 9 in Caston win over Knox

Caston baseball racks up 12 hits in season-opening win over Tri-County

Caston 12, Knox 3: Isabel Scales homered twice and added a single, and Addison Zimpleman had two hits at the plate and fanned nine while getting the win in the circle for Caston in a Hoosier North road win over Knox Thursday.

Maddi Smith, Kinzie Mollenkopf and Macee Hinderlider also had two hits each.

Caston had back-to-back four-run innings in the third and fourth to build a 9-1 lead.

Caston improved to 3-0, 1-0 Hoosier North and will travel to John Glenn Friday.

Baseball

Caston 14, Tri-County 1 (6 innings): Kade Zeider pitched a five-hitter with six strikeouts, and Joey Spin and Jackson Rentschler had three RBIs each for Caston in a road win over Tri-County in their season opener Thursday.

Rentschler had three hits, and Joey Spin, Sam Smith and Cam Kline had two hits each. Carter See, Zeider and Jessie Rock-Wolf had one hit each.

Kline had two RBIs, and Zeider, Smith and Rock-Wolf had one RBI each.

Caston also drew eight walks. Talon Zeider walked three times and scored three runs. See walked twice and scored twice.

The Comets also stole 10 bases and did not commit an error behind Zeider.

“We have really put a focus on baserunning and putting pressure on the opposition, and we opened with 10 stolen bases tonight,” Caston coach Blake Mollenkopf said.

Mollenkopf also complimented Zeider.

“Kade did a nice job challenging hitters,” Mollenkopf said. “I thought he competed and was around the zone all night.”

Already leading 7-1, Caston scored seven runs in the top of the sixth.

Caston will travel to Manchester for a doubleheader at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Caston 17, North White 5 (JV, 5 innings, Monday): Jackson Rentschler and Pete DuVall combined on a five-inning no-hitter for the Caston JV in a road win over North White Monday.

Rentschler also had two hits and four RBIs at the plate. Rowan Jellison had two hits and an RBI, Grant Yadon had two hits and two RBIs, and DuVall and Preston Holderfield had two RBIs each. Caleb Stinson had two hits.

Kagan Lee, Isaac Craig and Ryan Spin each had an RBI during Caston’s 12-run third inning.

The Caston girls track team placed third in a three-way meet to Faith Christian and host North White Tuesday.

Caston had first-place finishes in the discus, shot put, 100 meters, 100 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles. Caston also had second-place finishes in the discus, shot put, 100 meter hurdles and high jump.

In the boys meet, Caston prevailed over North White and Faith Christian. Caston athletes won the 1,600 meters, the 3,200 meters, 110 meter hurdles, the 300 meter hurdles, the 4 x 100 meter relay, the high jump and the shot put.

Caston also had second-place finishers in the 100 meters, 800 meters, long jump, discus and shot put.
