The Caston football team lost 28-6 to West Central last week to finish an 0-10 campaign.
It marked their third winless season in the last five years, and they will carry a 14-game losing streak into 2023.
Caston did achieve offensive balance against West Central – 96 yards rushing, 96 yards passing. But they also had a long Josh Sullivan touchdown run called back by penalty.
Caston’s top rusher (Jabez Yarber) and receiver (Grant Yadon) could both be back next year, but the Comets will say goodbye to senior quarterback Landon Shafer. Gavin Mollenkopf will be a sophomore next fall and is the “heir apparent” at quarterback, according to coach Chris Ulerick.
“We couldn’t make the play when we needed to,” Ulerick told the Pharos-Tribune. “The kids played hard. The kids played better. I think they even played better than the first time around (a 26-8 loss to West Central on Aug. 19). They just made some plays and we didn’t. That was unfortunately how it all transpired. We’ve got to get better at situational football and we’ve got to get better at playing with a selfless attitude.”
In addition to Shafer, Caston also graduates Sullivan, Quinlan Kelly, Evan Howard and Jayden Wilson.
