Jake Seuferer won both the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, and Tanner Reese and Spencer Backus also won multiple blue ribbons for the Rochester boys swimming team in an 87-85 loss to visiting Lewis Cass at the Rochester Middle School pool Tuesday.
Seuferer, Reese, Backus and Wes Steininger teamed up to win the meet-closing 400 freestyle relay in 3:45.46. They finished over a minute faster than the Rochester “B” relay that finished second.
“They can put together a pretty solid relay,” Rochester coach Stephanie Brown said. “They’re all pretty fast, so just the faster they can get, which in that 100, it’s going to be the start and it’s going to be the turns. As we continue to fine-tune those, that relay is
going to be pretty competitive.”
The heartbreaker might have been in the meet-opening 200 medley relay. In that event, Lewis Cass’ Jayden Ramer touched the wall to win in 1:54.83. Rochester held the lead until the freestyle leg and finished in 1:55.15.
That result alone was an eight-point swing in the final standings.
Still, Rochester coach Stephanie Brown noted how fast anchor leg Reece Johnson swam. Seuferer, Steininger and Reese joined him on the relay.
“Reece had a phenomenal night,” Brown said. “He got out-touched on that first relay, and he was pretty bummed about it. … It was probably a pretty decent split (26.25 seconds), but he was really, really bummed about getting out-touched on that relay, and we talked to him, and it was the turn. He got you on the turn. … The 48 other yards of the pool, you outraced him; he just got you on the turn. But after that, he really came back, and he did awesome. He had a lifetime PR in the 100 fly (1:06.98). He took off eight seconds. … He took off three seconds there (on his 100 breaststroke PR) and out-touched the guy at the wall, and he had a good swim on the 200 (freestyle) relay.”
Seuferer’s 200 freestyle time was 1:57.00, and he swam a personal-best 58.66 seconds in the 100 butterfly.
Reese won the 500 freestyle in 5:53.42.
“Tanner had a really nice time in the 500 free,” Brown said. “He was only two seconds off his PR (personal record), which is really pretty good for this point in the season given how fast his 500 time already is.”
Backus swam a 1:10.09 and beat teammate Lane Shank by 10 seconds as part of a 1-2 Zebra finish in the 100 backstroke.
Brown also praised the development of Brevin Nicholson and also noted the progress of newcomers Grant Bailey and David Smith.
In the girls meet, the highest-placing Rochester swimmer in an individual event was junior Ava Thomas, who was third in the 200 individual medley in 3:46.21; freshman Kylie Haselby, who was third in diving; and Seanna Gudas, who swam an 8:18.25 and finished third in the 500 freestyle.
“Kylie had a great night diving,” Brown said. “It was her first time doing six dives. She did a great job.”
Rochester also finished third in the 200 medley relay, third in the 200 freestyle relay and second in the 400 freestyle relay. The 400 freestyle relay consists of Jenna Seuferer, Skyla Mitchell, Ava Thomas and Haselby, and they were timed in 5:22.96.
Brown also praised Mitchell, who swam the 200 individual medley in 4:13.64; Jenna Seuferer, who swam her first 100 butterfly in 1:42.40; Gudas, who swam the 500 freestyle coming off an illness; and Audrey Widman, who also swam her first 500 freestyle.
Eight of the 12 girls on the team are first-time swimmers, and Brown is keeping goals modest.
“There’s so much to learn,” Brown said. “We’ve got a swimmer that really picked up on the breaststroke. But at the last meet, she did one tiny thing wrong. Well, we just hadn’t talked about that yet because when you’re brand new and we’re only four weeks in, there’s just so much to learn. With those kids, we’re just looking for improvement every time, and sometimes, improvement is doing all your flip turns. Sometimes, improvement is legally swimming the whole race. And so the nice thing with individual sports is you can always look for improvement somewhere, whether it’s in the time or … doing all the flip turns or things like that.”
