Shedrow’s double-double spurs Culver past Elkhart Christian

CULVER –- Maddie Shedrow scored a game-high 13 points and also pulled down 10 rebounds for the Culver girls basketball team in a 30-26 home win over Elkhart Christian Thursday.

Shedrow also had three assists and three steals.

Kenzie Banks had six points, and Alina Pizur had five points and seven steals.

Lizzie Pugh contributed four points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

The game was tied 13-13 at halftime, but the Lady Cavs held the Lady Eagles to two points in the third quarter.

Darryn Caudill had 11 points for Elkhart Christian. Camille Annan had four points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Culver improved to 2-2. Elkhart Christian fell to 0-1.

Shedrow is Culver’s lone senior. First-year coach Shane Lowry said he wants the ball in Shedrow’s hands in close games late to help milk the clock and maintain leads.

“This team hasn’t been in a position to put a game away,” Culver first-year coach Shane Lowry said. “Maddie being a senior, she’s never been expected to lead. … This is a game where we had to get it in her hands down the stretch there and make a few plays to put the game away, and once it goes to somebody without experience, they just want to play basketball, and that’s what happens when you get some shots that you don’t necessarily need or want at the end of the game.

“It is what it is when you’re young. You almost have to ride the lightning.”

Defensively, Culver has held opponents to under 35 points in three of their four games. Elkhart Christian shot 26 percent from the field and committed 20 turnovers.

With Baleigh Binkley out, Lowry praised Luci Overmyer for playing a bigger role.

“We’re meeting our defensive goals, and that’s always a good thing,” Lowry said. “When you don’t score, that’s what you have to hang your hat on. We’re jumping in and out of a 2-3 zone and a gap man and trying to run some fullcourt stuff.”
