BUNKER HILL — The Tippecanoe Valley boys swimming team might be small in numbers, but they are mighty fast.

Tippecanoe Valley sophomore Marcus Smith broke the Three Rivers Conference record in the 100 backstroke and joined teammate Carson Parker in winning four blue ribbons to help lead the Vikings to a third-place finish out of six teams at the conference swim meet at Maconaquah Saturday.

Smith’s backstroke time of 53.66 seconds was 2.10 seconds faster than the previous record set by Northfield’s Grant Dale in 2021. Smith also tore through the 200 individual medley in 2:06.14, beating the field by 15 seconds; Smith the TRC record of 2:03.90 in this event last year.

Parker also won the 100 butterfly in 55.37 seconds, beating the field by over two seconds, and won the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.47 to break Maconaquah’s Cole Bretzman’s conference record of 1:04.64 set two years ago.

Isaac Whetstone added a win in the 500 freestyle, swimming the final 50 yards in 28.08 seconds to overtake Rochester’s Jake Seuferer and win in 5:01.35. Seuferer was second in 5:02.93.

Smith, Whetstone and Carson Parker also combined with Karl Parker to set conference records in both the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay. Their 200 medley relay time of 1:39.96 smashed the previous record by a team from Rochester in 2018 by 4.25 seconds. Their 200 freestyle relay time of 1:29.24 beat the previous conference record set by Maconaquah in 2020 by 4.77 seconds.

Valley only has seven swimmers on its boys team, and they did not enter a 400 freestyle relay. They finished 57 points behind second-place Rochester and by not fielding a 400 freestyle relay, that put them in a 32-point hole from the start.

So with their better depth, it was the Zebras who placed second. Seuferer won the 50 freestyle in 23.45 seconds in addition to his runner-up finish in the 500 freestyle.

Seuferer also anchored Rochester’s victorious 400 freestyle relay team as he overtook Maconaquah’s Garrett McManus with a 49.92 second final leg in the final 100 yards to win in 3:32.83.

Meanwhile, the Rochester girls scored 218 points and finished third out of six teams. Tippecanoe Valley scored 161 points and was fourth.

Rochester’s top individual finisher was senior Melody Hisey, who was second in both the 200 freestyle in 2:12.80 and 100 freestyle in 59.40 seconds. Divers Simona Faoro, Kendyll Bradley and Maddy Brouyette took second, third and fourth, respectively, in diving.

Valley’s Kendall Craig took second in the 500 freestyle while Makena Smith was second in the 100 breaststroke.

Maconaquah won both the girls and boys titles. The Braves have now won seven consecutive girls conference titles and eight straight boys conference titles since the conference meet was started in the 2015-16 school year.
