Valley gets 7 pins, wins at Warsaw

Cumberland, Perkins score in double figures, but third-quarter struggles doom Vikes in loss

Wrestling

Tippecanoe Valley 42, Warsaw 40 (Wednesday): Dalton Alber, Ian Becker, Galvin Shambaugh, Drake Montelongo, Darren Crump, Jadyn Virgil and Bazle Owens all won by fall for Valley in a road win over Warsaw Wednesday.

Valley travels to Goshen for an invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday.

IndianaMat ranks Montelongo No. 3: IndianaMat.com has ranked Valley junior Drake Montelongo No. 3 among 120-pound wrestlers that feed into the East Chicago semistate.

The top four in each weight class at semistate qualify for the state finals.

Montelongo was a semistate qualifier last year at 113.

Valley drops NorthWood, adds 3-way dual: The Valley-NorthWood wrestling dual scheduled for Jan. 21 has been canceled.

Instead, Valley will travel to Northfield for a three-team dual at 6 p.m. Jan. 20. Southwood will also participate.

Boys basketball

LaVille 58, Valley 48 (Tuesday): Nolan Cumberland scored 15 points, and Dawson Perkins added 10 for the visiting Vikings (1-6) in a loss to LaVille Tuesday.

Valley committed 18 turnovers. They were outscored 10-2 in the third quarter.

“The Vikings’ turnovers and scoring woes in the third quarter did them in again,” Valley coach Chad Patrick said in a statement.

Leyton Czarnecki scored 16 points to lead LaVille. Andrew Dill knocked down four 3-pointers and had 14, and Bobby Good added 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

LaVille led 28-21 at halftime.

The JV game was canceled due to contact tracing within the Valley team.

TVMS 32, St. Michael 18 (Wednesday)

TVMS 30, St. Michael 26 (Wednesday)

Blain Sheetz and Tristyn Ragon scored 10 points each for the TVMS eighth-graders (3-10) in a win over St. Michael Catholic School Wednesday. Sheetz also had three rebounds. Ian Cooksey dished out five assists.

TVMS (10-4) also won the seventh grade game behind Grady Moriarty’s 10 points and five rebounds. Wes Parker added eight points.
