Valley softball roundup: Bussard Ks 12 in loss to NorthWood

Despite Bussard’s 13 Ks, Winamac scores in seventh to beat Valley in opener

Softball

NorthWood 3, Valley 0 (Monday): Dalynne Bussard and Mackaylie Costello combined on a one-hitter, but the Valley softball team lost to host NorthWood Monday.

Bussard pitched the first five innings and allowed one hit and three unearned runs. She walked two and fanned 12. Costello pitched the sixth and walked one in a hitless sixth.

Adriana Beachy pitched an eight-hit shutout with one walk and 11 strikeouts for NorthWood.

Costello had two hits, and Hailey Swope, Anna Shock, Temperance Caudill, Elise Smith. K.C. Shriver and Bussard had one single each.

Smith also drew a walk. Shriver also stole a base.

Valley fell to 0-2.

Winamac 6, Valley 5 (March 21): Dalynne Bussard had two hits and two RBIs, and Mackaylie Costello also singled and drove in two runs for the visiting Lady Vikings in a loss to Winamac in their season opener on March 21.

Kahlyn Manns also had two hits and two runs scored for Valley. Elise Smith had an RBI.

Temperance Caudill and Kaitlyn Threlkel each added a hit.

Makayla Werner had two hits and two RBIs, and Corrin Combs tripled and also had two RBIs for Winamac. Isabelle Decker and freshman Maggie Keller each had a hit and an RBI. Brooke Rausch had a single.

Bussard allowed four hits and six runs (four earned) in a complete-game effort. She walked three and struck out 13.

Freshman Adrianna Hall fanned five in two hitless innings of relief for the win for Winamac.

Valley scored four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead, but Winamac came back with two runs in the bottom half to tie it before scoring in the bottom of the seventh for a walk-off win.
