Week 8 roundup: Valley defense notches 3rd shutout in 5 games, stays unbeaten

Winamac forces 4 turnovers in win over Caston; Pioneer tops Culver for 6th straight win

Tippecanoe Valley 54, Wabash 0 (Friday): Jamasyn Virgil ran for 122 yards and a touchdown, and Braden Shepherd ran for 112 yards and a touchdown, and the Valley defense forced four turnovers in a Three Rivers Conference road win over Wabash Friday.

Wade Jones returned an interception for a touchdown, and Shepherd and Rex Kirchenstien also had interceptions.

Kirchenstien also had a team-high four receptions for 68 yards and a touchdown on offense. Virgil had three receptions for 21 yards.

Dalton Alber had three carries for 60 yards and a touchdown, and Nate Parker had 51 yards of total offense and a touchdown.

Karl Parker and Brock Derf also had touchdown runs.

Valley had a 442-102 advantage in total yards.

The Valley defense has allowed one offensive touchdown in their last five games.

Winamac 49, Caston 8 (Friday): Hayden Clark ran for 121 yards and two touchdowns, and Jaden Terry ran for 87 yards, caught a touchdown pass from Russell Compton and intercepted a pass on defense for the host Warriors (6-0, 4-0 Hoosier North) in a rout of Caston Friday.

Jadon Jones ran for 51 yards and a touchdown on five carries, and Compton and Caleb Bucinski also had touchdown runs for Winamac. Xavier Holehan scored on a 20-yard interception return in the fourth quarter.

Kyle Olds also had an interception. Caleb Good recovered a fumble.

Landon Shafer had a 7-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter for Caston, who fell to 2-6, 0-6 Hoosier North. Grant Hickle had a team-high 111 yards rushing, including a 73-yard run in the fourth quarter that set up Shafer’s touchdown.

Hickle also had three receptions for 57 yards.

Sam Smith carried 11 times for 46 yards and also tied for the team lead with five tackles on defense.

Caston committed four turnovers.

Cain Schanlaub and Levi Martin also had five tackles each. Shaffer had four tackles. Grant Hickle, Garrison Hickle, Josh Sullivan, Evan Howard and Caydin Webb had three tackles each/ Kyle Roudebush had two tackles, and Grant Yadon had a tackle.

Winamac led 28-0 at halftime. Caston has not beaten Winamac since 2012.

Pioneer 28, Culver 6 (Friday): Brock Robinson ran for 146 yards and a touchdown, and Caydin Hill ran for 57 yards and two touchdowns for the visiting Panthers in a win over Culver Friday.

Beau Mersch had 43 yards rushing and also caught two passes for 50 yards and a touchdown.

Sweet added 11 yards rushing in addition to the 50 yards passing to Mersch. He also had an interception on defense and accounted for 12 tackles.

Oscar Solano had 17 tackles, Eli Miller had nine tackles, Logan Smith had eight tackles, and Derrick LeGrand had seven stops. Tyler Zellers had two tackles for loss and a sack.

Culver had 206 yards rushing but just eight yards passing.

Pioneer won their sixth straight game and improved to 6-2 overall and 5-1 in the Hoosier North. Culver fell to 2-4, 1-4.
