Winamac 4 x 800 relay qualifies for regional

The Winamac 4 x 800 relay team finished third at the Kankakee Valley sectional Tuesday and advanced to the regional.

The team consists of Kingsley Kroft, Alexis Sheets, Kate Collins and Ariana Gualajara. Their time of 10:49.42 beat out Kouts by 7.44 seconds for the final automatic regional spot.

Winamac scored 19.5 points and placed ninth out of 14 teams in the sectional. The 4 x 800 relay was the only event in which Winamac advanced.

Sheets, Maggie Smith, Kroft and Brenna Day combined to finish fifth in the 4 x 100 relay.

The individual high scorer was freshman Kelsey Wegner, who was fifth in the 1,600 and seventh in the 3,200.

Sheets was also eighth in the 400, and Collins was also eighth in the 800.

Lauren Fredel was the only Lady Warrior to score in the field events after tying for seventh in the pole vault with a clearance of 6-6.

Kankakee Valley scored 187 points to win the sectional on its home track. Kouts was second with 73 points.

The top three finishers in each event advanced to regional, plus the next four best performances in the sectionals feeding into the regional.

The regional is at 6 p.m. Eastern (5 p.m. Central) this Tuesday at Portage.
