Winamac sports briefs: Fierens, Stark key boys soccer’s win over North Miami

Bucinski claims medalist honors in girls golf’s win at Rensselaer; volleyball falls to Knox

Boys soccer

Winamac 3, North Miami 0 (Thursday): Thomas Fierens and Alex Stark each had a goal and assist for visiting Winamac in a win over sectional rival North Miami Thursday.

Truman Johansen also had a goal for Winamac (3-1-1).

Max Murray had two saves in goal for the shutout.

Winamac travels to Rochester for a game at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Girls golf

Winamac 181, Rensselaer 206 (Thursday): Keira Bucinski shot a 42 to claim medalist honors for the visiting Lady Warriors in a win over sectional rival Rensselaer at Curtis Creek Golf Course Thursday.

Bianca Huizar added a 43, Janet Calfee had a 44, Olivia Link had a 52, and Giselle Lowry had a 55 for the Winamac varsity.

McKenzie Mitchell led the JV with a 56.

Volleyball

Knox def. Winamac, 21-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-13 (Thursday): McKenzie Hinz had 11 kills, and Alyssa Villanueva added eight kills for Winamac in a Hoosier North road loss to Knox Thursday.

Sydney Thompson had three aces. Five players reached double figures in digs, led by Chloe Rausch with 14. Rausch also had 15 assists while Kaya Campbell had 11.

Villaneuva had a team-high 14 serves received.

Winamac travels to Kankakee Valley for a tournament at 10 a.m. Eastern Saturday.

“Our big focus going into this weekend at Kankakee Valley’s Invite is to be more aggressive and confident in ourselves and teammates,” coach Heather Kasten said in a statement. “When we swung hard and didn’t let a rally get too long, we came out on top. We also improved upon things that we struggled with last Saturday at Northfield but just haven’t put it all together yet.”
