Mike Zehner resigned as football coach at Culver at a school board meeting Monday, but he will stay on as the school’s athletic director.
Zehner coached Culver for seven years, compiling a 35-42 record. Culver went 7-5 in 2022, which included a win over Pioneer for the first time in school history.
The team eventually lost to North Judson in the sectional for the fourth straight year. Three of those losses came in the sectional final.
Replacing Darren Rodriguez, Zehner came to Culver in 2016 after a four-year run as the coach at Rochester. His career record is 62-58.
Zehner is a 2001 Culver grad who starred on Cavalier teams that won back-to-back sectionals in 1999-2000. Zehner also played collegiately at Manchester University.
The new coach will inherit a roster without RTC Player of the Year Shane Shuman, who will graduate. Shuman was both the school’s all-time leading rusher and an all-state linebacker.
WKVI was first to report Zehner’s decision.
