Valley’s Shepherd takes 300 hurdles title, also advances in 100 hurdles, discus; Calloway, Bailon, Sailors, Hoover also reach regional

Kyra Doran of Rochester won the long jump at the Bremen sectional Tuesday, and she also qualified for the regional in two other events by finishing in the top three.
In addition, teammates Allyson Calloway and Maddie Bailon will join her in individual events at the regional.
Doran’s winning jump of 16-7 ¼ bested runner-up Jersey Hunter of Plymouth by 8 ¼ inches. Doran qualified for the regional for the second straight year. She jumped 16-5 in winning the Three Rivers Conference title at Wabash May 8.
Doran also finished third in the 100 hurdles in 15.75 seconds behind Hunter and Tippecanoe Valley’s Betty Shepherd.
Doran also qualified as part of the 4 x 100 relay with Kyla Conley, Bailon and Maddie MacLain. The team finished third in a school-record 52.20 seconds.
Calloway qualified for the regional in the 3,200 for the third straight year by finishing third in 12:22.35.
Bailon finished fifth in the 200 in 26.32 seconds but advanced on a callback.
Rochester scored 50 points and finished fifth out of 13 teams.
Shepherd was Valley’s only regional qualifier, and she made it in three events. Besides advancing in the 100 hurdles, she also won the sectional title in the 300 hurdles in 46.12 seconds and placed second in the discus with a throw of 105-2.
Valley finished eighth. Shepherd singlehandedly accounted for 26 of her team’s 41 points.
North Miami had two regional qualifiers and finished ninth with 35 points. Sophomore Andrea Hoover won the shot put title with a throw of 36-10 ¾. Senior Grace Sailors, a Franklin College recruit, finished second in the high jump with a clearance of 5-2 and will join Hoover at the regional.
Among other area teams, Culver was 11th with nine points, Caston was 12th with 8.5 points, and Argos was 13th with 5.5 points.
Plymouth scored 163.5 points to win their second straight sectional. Bremen was second with 75.5 points, and Culver was third with 64.
Goshen hosts the regional at 6 p.m. this Tuesday.
