NORTH MANCHESTER — Led by all-conference runner Allyson Calloway, the Rochester girls cross-country team scored 72 points and finished second out of seven complete teams at the Three Rivers Conference meet at Manchester Oct. 4.

Calloway finished fifth in the field of 65 runners in 20:41. Teammates Daniela Ochoa and Vivian Miller finished 13th and 20th, respectively, to earn honorable mention status.

Ochoa finished in 22:09, but Southwood’s Paige Nelson ran a 22:03 to nose her out for the final all-TRC spot. Miller, a junior, ran a personal best 22:57.

The top 12 runners made the all-TRC team. Those finishing between 13th and 20th places earned honorable mention status.

Other Rochester runners included Adison Hayes, who was 22nd in 23:26; Brooklyn Chandler, who was a stride behind Hayes in 23rd in 23:27; Kadence Bradley, who was 33rd in 24:34; Trinity Baine, who was 46th in 26:45; Jocelynn Shafer, who was 52nd in 29:13; Addy Hake, who was 60th in 32:46; Ainsley Horvath, who was 61st in 32:51; and Emah Bradley, who was 65th in 37:05.

“That was definitely the high end of what we thought they could do,” Rochester first-year coach Troy Pryor said. “When we did the math leading up to this, we thought Maconaquah would be a tough ask to go get for second place, but we knew it was achievable. I think our realistic goal was always top three with second being the stretch goal. We said all week coming in was to put a little bit of fear into Lewis Cass and let them know that we’re here, not just this year but we’re here going forward. That’s our goal – to start competing for conference titles starting next year.”

Calloway dropped 56 seconds off her time from the New Haven Classic at Huntington University one week earlier.

“The big difference for her is she’s getting healthy,” Pryor said. “She had gone through a bit of an illness the week leading up to New Haven, and so I think her legs were just a little bit zapped. But she’s recovering a little bit from that and getting a little stronger and really running legs, not on tired legs but getting through an illness.”

The key at the sectional could be the group of Miller, Hayes and Chandler.

“That is the pack that we’ve been trying to build all year,” Pryor said. “And we’ve told them that advancing to regionals as a team comes down to those three. And occasionally Trinity or Kady (Bradley) may be able to come up and help them out, but really, I think those three are starting to separate themselves, and that’s who we’re going to tide with going into sectionals, and I’ve told them how well we do at conference, how well we do at sectionals, that rests on you guys. They’re the most important runners on our team right now.”

Lewis Cass won the team title with 44 points. Lewis Cass senior Aftin Griffin was the individual champion in 19:14. Northfield’s Kaleigh Rice, who finished in 20:06, was the only runner who finished within a minute of her.

In the boys meet, Rochester had an incomplete team, but junior Leandro Javier made honorable mention all-TRC by finishing 17th in a personal best 18:10.

“I think this whole season has been huge for him,” Pryor said of Javier. “Obviously, last year, he had Reece Johnson as a great leader and a great senior whom he could pace off, and for him to come out here and I think learn that he’s a good runner too. It wasn't just running with Reece; that he’s really great in his own right. He’s just built confidence in every single meet this year, and I think it all culminated here.”

Other Rochester runners included Caden Biernacki, who was 35th in 19:31; Tyson Wachtmann, who was 39th in 20:02; and Lucas Scorsone, who was 53rd in 21:09.

“Mossy, he, I thought, had a great race,” Pryor said of Scorsone, referring to him by his nickname. “He PR’d again today. He’s had the right attitude all season as far as putting in the work and trying to get better. Obviously, Caden Biernacki has been our consistent number two, and he’s been our best freshman, and I think he’s certainly one of our most promising stars, but I think Mossy is definitely setting himself up for a breakout track season.”

Wabash won the team title with 18 points. Northwestern was second with 42. Seven schools had complete teams; Rochester, Whitko and Southwood did not.

Isaiah Cordes led the Wabash pack over the finish line in 16:26 to win the individual title. Wabash had five of the top six runners. They have won the boys TRC title eight times in the last nine years.

Rochester will return to Manchester for Saturday’s sectional. The boys race will start at 10:30 a.m., and the girls race will follow at 11:15 a.m.

Middle school

The Rochester Middle School girls cross-country team scored 74 points and finished fourth out of four complete teams at the Running Rivers Conference meet. Manchester won with 42 points, edging out Wabash on the sixth runner’s tiebreaker.

Rochester’s Addisyn Malone, who was fifth in 12:12, and Katelyn Conliff, who was sixth in 12:17, earned medals. Both are eighth-graders.

The Rochester Middle School boys scored 54 points and took second behind Wabash in the RRC meet. Rochester’s Warner DuBois was fourth in 10:57, Everett Horvath was 10th in 11:35, Parker Smith was 12th in 11:46, Ayden Jaeger was 13th in 11:53, Gil Newton was 15th in 11:59, and Landyn Brower was 20th in 12:21.

DuBois, Smith and Jaeger are eighth-graders, and Horvath, Newton and Brower are sixth-graders.
