Boys: Rochester’s Javier, Valley’s Hammon, Marquez, Argos’ Stackhouse advance as individuals

NORTH MANCHESTER — No area cross-country teams advanced from the Manchester sectional Saturday, but eight individual runners – four girls, four boys – did advance to the regional.

In the girls meet, Rochester scored 190 points and finished seventh out of nine complete teams while Tippecanoe Valley, Argos and Culver had incomplete teams.

Meanwhile, the Tippecanoe Valley boys placed ninth with 222 points while Rochester and Argos had incomplete teams.

All four area girls to advance were from Rochester: senior Allyson Calloway, who was 27th overall and sixth among girls on non-advancing teams in 21:41; freshman Daniela Ochoa, who was 34th overall and eighth among individuals in 22:47; junior Vivian Miller, who was 41st overall and 10th among individuals in 22:59; and sophomore Adison Hayes, who was 44th overall and 13th among individuals in 23:36.

Calloway qualified for the regional for the fourth time in her career. The other three are first-time regional qualifiers.

Among area boys, two were from Tippecanoe Valley and one each from Rochester and Argos. Valley freshman Collin Hammon was 17th overall and fourth among individuals in 18:11, and senior Christopher Marquez was 30th overall and ninth among individuals in 18:42. Rochester junior Leandro Javier qualified for regionals for the second straight year after taking 21st overall and seventh among individuals in 18:18. Argos freshman Emry Stackhouse, the only runner on his team, also advanced by finishing 34th overall and 12th among individuals in 18:44.

Every girl who ran 24:16 or faster advanced as did every boy who ran 18:58 or faster.

Columbia City won their second straight girls sectional title with 34 points. Warsaw (34), Huntington North (72), Plymouth (89) and Culver Academy (156) also advanced.

Despite having only one of the top 12 runners, Warsaw won their 15th consecutive boys sectional title with 72 points. Columbia City (78), Plymouth (79), Wabash (103) and Culver Academy (127) also moved on.

Huntington University will host the regional this Saturday. The boys race will begin at 10:30 a.m., and the girls race will follow at 11:15 a.m.
