3A, No. 10 John Glenn blanks Rochester behind Chrapliwy

Good: ‘If we clean up the defense a little bit more, then that’s a lot closer game’

Joe Chrapliwy pitched a three-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts, and Silas Kaser and Frankie Lizzi had two hits and two RBIs each for the John Glenn baseball team in a 7-0 win over host Rochester at Bob Copeland Field on May 13.

All three Zebras hits were singles – Tanner Reinartz’s blooper in the first, Evan Elliott’s blooper in the fourth and Jake Seuferer’s hit in the seventh.

Rochester did not get a runner into scoring position until the bottom of the seventh.

“He had a really good breaking ball,” Rochester coach Cory Good said of Chrapliwy. “You know, I think that kept us off-balance enough to where I thought when we saw the fastball, we did a pretty good job with it. But that was a really good curve ball, and he could locate it really well. I think that’s what kept us off-balance and made him so good tonight.”

Class 3A, No. 10 John Glenn improved to 19-2. Rochester dropped to 12-5.

The Falcons came in averaging over 11 runs per game.

Third baseman Collin Stephens, who came in leading the state in RBIs with 39, was held without a hit or an RBI against the Zebra pitching trio of Evan Elliott, Landen Bumford and Colton Ferverda.

First baseman Brycen Hannah, a travel ball teammate of Rochester’s Tarick McGlothin and Aaron Huffman, was also held hitless.

Lizzi capped off a three-run first with a two-run double. Kaser had an RBI single in the second and a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

But Rochester also committed five errors.

“We felt like we competed for most of the game,” Good said. “The first four runs of the game that scored were walks, and then they knocked them in. If we clean up the defense a little bit more, then that’s a lot closer game than it was.

“And I thought it was kind of a closer game than the scoreboard indicated anyway a little bit. But we need to clean up the defense. … We’ve got to make the routine plays.”
