Argos sectional alignment: Hoops sectionals mix traditional rivals, newcomers like Elkhart Christian

BY VAL TSOUTSOURIS

Sports Editor, RTC

Elkhart Christian and North Judson both won regional titles last season in boys basketball, and Argos might have to beat one or both to advance starting in the 2024-25 school year.

On the other hand, the teams that knocked them out of the last two sectionals are no longer there based on the IHSAA release of the sectional alignments for the next two school years Tuesday.

The new alignment keeps traditional rivals but adds Elkhart Christian, who had been in another 1A sectional, and North Judson, who drops from Class 2A to Class 1A.

Volleyball, girls basketball, boys basketball

In addition to Elkhart Christian and North Judson, Argos’ sectional rivals for volleyball in Class 1A, Sectional 51 will include Culver, Oregon-Davis, South Central (Union Mills) and Triton.

Trinity Greenlawn will join those seven for girls basketball and boys basketball.

South Central is a three-time defending sectional volleyball champion who moves down from Class 2A. Argos, meanwhile, has not won a volleyball sectional title since 1973.

New girls basketball coach Brian Jennings enters a sectional that has no reigning sectional champion. South Central, however, has six consecutive winning seasons.

An additional obstacle in boys basketball could be Triton, who is expected to return four starters from a 17-win team last year.

Girls soccer

Trinity Greenlawn ended Argos’ streak of five consecutive sectional titles last fall, but they and Bremen have both moved to Class 1A, Sectional 35 for the new cycle.

Instead, new coach Ty Adley’s first Argos team will participate in Class 1A, Sectional 36 with Manchester and Oregon-Davis. The other three teams – Culver, LaVille and Rochester – remain the same.

Oregon-Davis has never won a sectional, but Manchester won one as recently as 2021.

Boys soccer

Argos stays in the same Class 1A sectional with Caston, Culver, North Miami and Winamac, but it changes numbers from Sectional 37 to Sectional 36.

The new team in the sectional is Lakeland Christian. They replace North White.

Lakeland Christian went 9-8-1 last year.

Argos advanced to the regional final before losing to Park Tudor last year.

Argos has won 17 sectional titles in their history; the other five schools have won six sectionals combined.
