Argos sports briefs: Softball, baseball season recaps

Softball

LaCrosse 12, Argos 1 (5 innings): Madisyn Barcus and Kara Sabanski each had a single, and Kendra Burkholder had an RBI for Argos in a five-inning loss to LaCrosse on May 17.

Allison Zahm allowed 12 runs in five innings and took the loss. She allowed 10 hits and walked five and struck out eight.

Argos committed three errors that led to three unearned runs for LaCrosse.

Argos goes 1-2 at Queen of Diamonds Tournament: The Argos softball team went 1-2 at the Queen of Diamonds Tournament at Newton Park in Lakeville on May 15.

They lost to West Noble 15-4 in five innings and Northfield 14-0 in five innings before beating Elkhart Christian 12-2 in six innings.

  • West Noble 15, Argos 4 (5 innings): Allison Zahm, Madisyn Barcus and Shelbi Weiser each had a hit and an RBI in the West Noble game. Kara Sabanski had an RBI. Carleigh Miller had a double. Aleasia Sarver started and took the loss, allowing three hits and 10 runs (five earned) in ⅓ of an inning. She walked six and fanned none. Makena Linebery worked the final 4 ⅔ innings and allowed nine hits and five runs (four earned). West Noble scored 11 runs in the first inning.

  • Northfield 14, Argos 0 (5 innings): Kadyn Baughman had a single, and Zahm had a double for Argos in a five-inning loss to Northfield. Carleigh Miller allowed 14 runs (seven earned) in four innings and took the loss. She walked five and struck out one. Northfield would go on to win the Class 1A state title.

  • Argos 12, Elkhart Christian 2 (6 innings): Miller went 4 for 4 with a triple and three singles and two RBIs, and Zahm had two triples and four RBIs for the Lady Dragons in their win over Elkhart Christian. Baughman went 3 for 5 with two RBIs. Kara Sabanski had a hit and an RBI, and Barcus, Lineberry, Weiser and Brylee Elliott each had a hit. Kendra Burkholder had an RBI. Zahm pitched a four-hitter with four walks and six strikeouts. Both runs she allowed were unearned.

Culver Academy 13, Argos 2 (5 innings): Lily McMillen had a single and two RBIs, and Madisyn Barcus, Allison Zahm, Carleigh Miller and Kendra Burkholder each had a single for Argos in a five-inning road loss to Culver Academy May 13.

Aleasia Sarver allowed five runs (one earned) in two innings. She allowed one hit and walked two while striking out one. Miller and Allison Zahm pitched one inning each in relief.

Argos committed six errors that led to seven unearned runs for Culver Academy.

Argos 9, Bethany Christian 8: Kendra Burkholder went 4 for 4 with an RBI, and Lily McMillen had a walk-off two-run double to cap a five-run seventh as the Lady Dragons earned a Hoosier Plains home win May 12.

Allison Zahm had two hits and two RBIs at the plate and also pitched an eight-hitter with five walks and 11 strikeouts in the circle. Makena Lineberry and Carleigh Miller had two hits and an RBI each, and Madisyn Barcus and Carlie Rex also had two hits each. Kadyn Baughman had a hit. Kara Sabanski had an RBI.

Bethany Christian led 4-1 after four innings and still led 5-4 going into the seventh.

Caston 23, Argos 5 (5 innings): Allison Zahm went 3 for 3 with two RBIs, and Kara Sabanski singled and doubled and also drove in two runs as part of a five-run fifth for Argos in a five-inning road loss to Class 1A, No. 1 Caston on May 10.

Kendra Burkholder received two of Argos’ five walks.

Aleasia Sarver took the loss after allowing 10 runs (four earned) in one inning. She allowed five hits and walked three while striking out one. Makena Lineberry, Carleigh Miller and Zahm pitched one inning each in relief.

Addison Zimpleman had three hits, including a homer, and four RBIs, and Kinzie Mollenkopf also had three hits and four RBIs for Caston in a home rout of Argos May 10.

Annie Harsh singled three times and drove in a run, and Eillie Deming singled, doubled and drove in two runs. Maddi Smith also singled and doubled.

Rebekah Milburn had a hit and two RBIs, and Isabel Scales and Bailey Harness each had a hit and an RBI. Layne Oliver had a hit. Macee Hinderlider had two RBIs, and Olivia Boldry drove in a run.

Caston scored 10 runs in the first inning and 11 more in the second. Trailing 23-0, Argos scored five times in the fifth.

Madisyn Barcus went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and three runs scored, and Kadyn Baughman and Kendra Burkholder had two hits and an RBI each. Makena Lineberry also had two hits. Brylee Elliott had a hit and an RBI.

Zahm also got the win in the circle. She allowed eight hits and walked four while striking out three. Argos committed four errors that led to four unearned runs.

Argos scored three runs in the first inning and never trailed.

Argos 22, Oregon-Davis 4 (5 innings): Kara Sabanski went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, and Carleigh Miller went 2 for 5 with four RBIs for the host Lady Dragons in a win over Oregon-Davis on May 7.

Brylee Elliott added two hits and an RBI as part of a 16-hit Argos attack. Makena Lineberry, Sophia Cook, Madisyn Barcus, Avery Ness, Alesia Sarver, Kadyn Baughman, Carlie Rex, Lily McMillen and Kelly Snavely had one hit each.

Aleasia Sarver got the win in the circle. She allowed five hits and four runs in three innings of relief. She walked three and struck out six. Allison Zahm started and worked two hitless innings with four strikeouts.

Argos scored 10 runs in the first inning and seven more in the second. The lead reached 22-1 after four innings.

Argos 23, South Bend Career Academy 8 (5 innings): Allison Zahm went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, and Kadyn Baughman and Aleasia Sarver went 2 for 2 each for the Lady Dragons in a Hoosier Plains home rout of South Bend Career Academy on April 30.

Makena Lineberry, Shelbi Weiser, Avery Ness, Brylee Elliott and Kelly Snavely had one hit each.

Argos also received 13 walks and four hit batters.

The teams combined for 10 errors.

Argos scored 14 runs in the bottom of the first to grab a 14-2 lead.

Aleasia Sarver went the first three innings in the circle for the win. Zahm pitched the final two innings. Sarver allowed five hits and walked six while striking out three. Zahm allowed two hits and walked two while fanning five.

Baseball

Triton 7-10, Argos 4-8: Triton swept a doubleheader from visiting Argos to close out the regular season on May 22.

The Trojans won the first game 7-4 and the second game 10-8.

Triton jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings of Game 1 and never trailed.

In Game 2, Triton scored six runs in the sixth to rally after falling behind 6-4 in the top half.

Covenant Christian (DeMotte) 12, Argos 1 (5 innings)

LaCrosse 11, Argos 1 (5 innings)

Argos went 0-2 as part of a three-way doubleheader at LaCrosse on May 15.

The Dragons scored a run in the bottom of the third against Covenant Christian, but they trailed 9-0 by then.

In the LaCrosse game, the Tigers scored in all five innings in which they batted and walked the game off with a three-run fifth after already leading 8-1. Argos had one hit.

LaCrosse would go on to beat Argos 11-3 in a Class 1A, Sectional 50 quarterfinal at LaCrosse on May 27.

South Central (Union Mills) 26, Argos 1 (5 innings): South Central amassed 22 hits, including 14 for extra bases, in a five-inning win over sectional rival Argos on May 13.

Argos scored their run in the bottom of the third. The Dragons had four hits.

Caston 23, Argos 1 (5 innings): Joey Spin did not allow an earned run in four innings on the mound, and he also went 5 for 5 with four RBIs and three runs scored at the plate for the visiting Comets in a five-inning rout of Argos on May 11.

Nine different Caston players had a hit and 10 different players had an RBI. Jackson Rentschler had two hits and two RBIs, and Jessie Rock-Wolf, Pete DuVall, Sam Smith and Kade Zeider also had two RBIs each.

Preston Holderfield, Caleb Stinson, Talon Zeider and Rowan Jellison had one RBI each.

Adam Rush went 2 for 2 with two runs scored.

Spin allowed three hits and one unearned run. He walked one and struck out seven. Jellison fanned three in one hitless inning of relief.

Jackson Kindig had two of Argos’ three hits. Dylan Kindig had the RBI.

Caston scored 10 runs in the third inning and nine more in the fifth.

Argos committed 10 errors that led to 13 unearned runs for Caston.

Bethany Christian 19, Argos 4 (5 innings): Argos had seven hits but suffered a Hoosier Plains home loss to Bethany Christian on May 8.

Bethany Christian led 11-0 after two innings.

Tippecanoe Valley 21, Argos 0 (5 innings): D.J. Estep had a pair of doubles and four RBIs, and Owen Kirchenstien had three hits and an RBI for Valley in a road win over Argos May 4.

Annikan Pettit and Braxton Davis had two hits and two RBIs each. Hunter Craft singled, tripled and drove in a run, Jeremy Landis had two hits and an RBI, and Evan Myers also had two hits.

Noah Prater had a hit and an RBI, and Payton Mills, Damion Kohler and Cameron Manuel each had hits.

Valley also had 17 stolen bases.

Davis and Manuel combined on a four-hit shutout. Davis walked two and struck out four in three innings, and Manuel walked none and fanned two in two innings.

Valley scored seven runs in the top of the first inning.
