Pioneer volleyball sweeps Caston

Girls golf
Tippecanoe Valley 200, Manchester 218, North Miami 219, Whitko 230 (Thursday): Lily Ault and Madelyn Weaver each shot a 48 to share medalist honors, and Kaydence Mellott added a 49 to lead the Tippecanoe Valley girls golf team to a four-way win over host North Miami, Manchester and Whitko at Peru Municipal Golf Course Thursday.
Valley shot a 200, North Miami had a 218, Manchester had a 218, and Whitko had a 230.
Molly Moriarty had a 55, and Cheney Canada had a 56 to round out the Valley scorecard.
Manchester’s Kayla Hippensteel also shot a 48 to share medalist honors with Ault and Weaver.
Allie Miller and Addison Miller each shot a 49 to lead North Miami.

Volleyball
Pioneer def. Caston, 25-16, 25-7, 25-19 (Thursday): The host Lady Panthers beat conference and sectional rival Caston Thursday on their senior night.
“The Lady Comets struggled with consistency against the Panthers,” Caston coach Melinda Shultz said in a statement. “During the third set, they were finally able to put together some good plays, but they were unable to pull ahead.”
West Central def. Culver, 25-15, 25-21, 25-12 (Thursday): Grace Sieber and Maegan Pearl had three kills each for Culver in a home loss to West Central Thursday.
The teams could meet again at the Oregon-Davis sectional Oct. 15-17.

Girls soccer
Argos Invite canceled: The Argos Invitational scheduled for Saturday has been canceled. LaPorte LaLumiere, John Glenn and Mount Vernon (Fortville) were the other three schools scheduled to compete.
Covenant Christian (DeMotte) 7, Culver 2 (Thursday): Baleigh Binkley scored twice for Culver in a road loss to Covenant Christian Thursday.
Gisselle Villegas contributed an assist on Binkley’s goal that tied the game 1-1 in the first half.
Skylar Bos had a hat trick for Covenant Christian, who led 4-1 at halftime.
Boys soccer
Tippecanoe Valley 0, Caston 0 (Thursday): The Comets and host Vikings played to a scoreless tie Thursday.
“Arturo Dominguez again was the standout defender for the Vikings,” Valley coach Andrew Luce said in a statement. “He covered a tremendous amount of space and frustrated the Comets multiple times as he broke up potential scoring chances. Jessica Brito, David Reyes, Jesus Baca all were brilliant tonight as they turned away anything Caston attempted. Also, coming up big, with his first clean sheet of the year, was junior Alexis Hernandez. Hernandez played his best game of his career as Viking keeper. He not only made save after save, he punted well and got the ball out to teammates up the field.”
Caston coach Narciso Sanchez praised his defenders and goalkeeper Bailey Zimpleman.
“We had moments of good play, but mostly we were caught combating counters from our own lack of conversions in the offensive third,” Samchez said. “We spent good time in the opposition's defensive side, but our ability to put anything dangerous on target was minimal. We played subpar in all areas of the game. We looked slow and very off technically. Our first touches let us down again. We played down a man for the last 20 minutes and thankfully our defensive four kept Valley out of the net. Credit to Valley. Coach had them ready to go.”
Oak Hill 2, Argos 1 (Aug. 22): Jake Stults scored in the 55th minute, but the Class 1A, No. 5 Dragons fell to host Oak Hill Aug. 22.
Evan Pearce scored twice in a nine-minute span in the second half for Oak Hill. His second goal came with less than two minutes left and gave the Golden Eagles their only lead of the game.
Argos had a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. Kurt Johnson had two saves in goal for Argos. Seth O’Blenis had four saves for Oak Hill, including one on a penalty kick.
Northwestern 3, Caston 2 (junior high, Thursday): Drew McGrew and Jan Aguilar-Mendez each scored for the Caston junior high in a loss to Northwestern Thursday. Braeden Dausman had nine saves in goal.
The game was tied 1-1 at halftime.
