WABASH — Rochester’s MaKenna Jackson won the title in the pole vault, and Audrey Wagner won the title in the 300 hurdles at the Three Rivers Conference girls track meet at Wabash Friday.

Jackson cleared 9-0 and edged Maconaquah’s Leilena Beachy, who vaulted 8-6. It is her first TRC title. Jackson broke the school record with a vault of 9-7 earlier in the season.

Wagner, a junior who had never participated in a 300 hurdles prior to this year, was timed in 51.20 seconds. She defeated Maconaquah’s Lucy Loshnowsky by 0.12 seconds for the title.

Jackson and Wagner helped Rochester finish fifth with 67 points. Maconaquah and Whitko tied for the title with 95 points.

Other Rochester scoring athletes in the girls meet included Kyra Doran, who was second in the 100 hurdles and the long jump; Allyson Calloway, who was third in the 3,200 and sixth in the 1,600; Ashlynn Weyant, who was fifth in both the discus and the shot put; Rilyn Strasser, who was fifth in the 300 hurdles and sixth in the 100 hurdles; Brooklyn Chandler, who was seventh in the 3,200; and Taylor Navara, who was eighth in the 800.

Also, the 4 x 800 relay consisting of Calloway, Navara, Chandler and Ella Hake took fifth in 11:11.7.

Jackson was the only senior on the girls team to score a point.

Doran’s competitiveness stands out, according to coach Ryan Helt.

“Kyra had an awesome night,” Helt said. “Now if you ask her, she’ll be upset that she didn’t win. But you look at her, she jumped 16 feet, 2 inches in the long jump. That’s the best freshman mark I’ve had recorded. There might be a better one in history, but I don’t know of it. She went out there, and I think that was her third hurdle race, and she won her heat and finished second overall. I couldn’t ask for anything more. She’s hungry to do better. I think she’s going to end up being one of the best ones we’ve had go through here.”

In the boys meet, Rochester accumulated 59 points and tied for fourth. There were no individual Zebra champions.

Rochester athletes who scored points by finishing in the top eight included Trevor Walley, who was second in the pole vault; Mason Hisey, who was second in the discus; Grant Bailey, who was third in the 800 and fourth in the 1,600; Bryce Baugher, who was fifth in the 200, fifth in the high jump, eighth in the 400 and eighth in the long jump; Maddox Jewell, who was fifth in the long jump and seventh in the 100; Gage Zimpelman, who was fifth in the pole vault; Harrison Dunwoody, who was sixth in the 110 hurdles; Tyler Reese, who was eighth in the shot put; Reece Johnson, who was eighth in the 3,200; and Liam Pinder, who was eighth in the discus.

Hisey’s discus throw of 138-5 was behind only the 143-9 that North Miami senior Isaac Ireeland threw. Ireland has signed to continue his track career at IU Kokomo while Hisey is only a sophomore.

They will have a rematch at the Plymouth sectional on May 16.

“Mason threw 138 feet,” Helt said. “That’s a great throw. I don’t know he felt about it. He came in the number one seed at 145 (feet), but that’s hard to replicate over and over. 138 feet is as good a throw as we’ve had here in a long time. He’s thrown at Plymouth before, and I think he’ll be comfortable there next week for sectional. And he’s still a puppy. He’s still got some growth, two more years of growing. I don’t know what his ceiling is, but I think it’s going to be pretty high.”

The Zebra boys also have two juniors in Jewell and Baugher who are doing both the sprints and the long jump.

Baugher skipped track so he could play travel basketball last spring. He had emailed the coaches earlier in the week telling them he would like to try the 200 meters. The 200 he ran at conference was the first time he had ever done it.

“I know he’s a junior, but he has limited track experience,” assistant coach Dr. John Nile said of Baugher. “And I think we can work with him and get him better. We have to find out where his fit is the best. It might be the 200. We talked earlier about Maddox Jewell. I was actually pleasantly surprised that he made the finals in the 100. He also made the finals in the long jump and jumped really well.”

Wabash won the title with 150 points.
