Believe in Weaver: No. 1 player shoots 84, helps Valley girls golf advance to regional

The Tippecanoe Valley girls golf team shot a 355 to finish second at the Warsaw sectional Friday and advance to regionals for the second time in school history.

The top three teams advanced. Culver Academy won the sectional with a 324. Warsaw was third with a 362 and also moved on.

Madelyn Weaver fired an 84 and was the low Valley scorer. Lily Ault had an 88, Kaydence Mellott had a 90, Molly Moriarty had a 93, and Maddie Thompson had a 116.

Valley’s score was nine strokes higher than their score on the same Rozella Ford course at the Three Rivers Conference tournament six days earlier but still good enough to advance over a Warsaw team that won the Northern Lakes Conference title last weekend.

Valley’s previous regional appearance was in 2020. Seniors Weaver, Ault, Mellott and Moriarty were also on that team.

Among other RTC area teams, Culver shot a 494 and finished ninth in the 11-team field. Kaitlyn Stacy led with a 115, Alisa Hinds carded a 117, Addison Crippen had a 126, and Mickenzie Beach had a 136.

NorthWood’s Sophie Kitson (84), NorthWood’s Riley Kitson (86) and Plymouth’s Madeline Borden (86) had the three lowest scores among players on non-advancing teams, and they also earned regional berths.

Culver Academy had the three lowest individual scores. Lynne Zhang was the medalist with a 75, Eleanor Teglia had a 77, and Karilyn Teglia had a 79.

NorthWood, the four-time defending sectional champion, shot a 367 and finished fifth. They had advanced to every regional since 2010.

East Noble will host the regional at 8:30 a.m. next Friday at Noble Hawk Golf Links in Kendallville.
