Brown likes defensive effort, but Rochester falls to LaVille

Kadu Tostes scored two goals to lead the LaVille boys soccer team to a 2-0 win over host Rochester at the Brent Blacketor Memorial Sports Complex Tuesday.

Tostes scored in each half.

He had a top shelf finish into the upper corner of the goal past Rochester freshman goalkeeper Kevin Jones with 24:48 left in the first half.

He fired another shot past Jones for a goal with 3:44 left in the game.

LaVille controlled possession for much of the game and had an 11-0 edge in shots on goal and a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.

“They’re really technically talented, and they’re very organized," Rochester coach Trevor Brown said. “They didn’t miss a lot of passes and traps. They were very fundamentally sound. They had a lot of good ideas in the build-up. I thought they were pretty creative and calm. So they were a tough match for us.”

Jones had a sprawling save on Jamison Norman with 38:45 left and was able to cut off the angle on Norman and stop another run down the middle with 32:35 left.

“Defensively, I think we did fairly well,” Brown said. “We gave up more shots than I would have liked, but Kevin came up big on some saves. Defensively, I thought our rotations were good. We’re very young on our back line, and we’re learning quickly, and I was happy with the effort we gave.”

LaVille improved to 2-0.

Rochester dropped to 1-3. They have scored two goals in four games.

“Again, we’re young, and we’ve really focused on the beginning of the season on defensive play and making sure our defensive rotations are good and we’re organized in the back,” Brown said. “We’ve spent so much time on that as a coach I’ve probably neglected some of the attack. Hopefully in the next week or two, we’ll be able to unlock the attack a little bit. We have some good ideas. It’s just that we got pinned in, and once you get pinned in like that and you get shifted into a defensive mentality, sometimes it’s hard to get out of it.

“And again, especially when you’re relying on a lot of young kids that they just maybe don’t have as much experience, but we’ll grow into the season, and I’m confident that we’re going to continue to get better.”

Sophomore Drew Lawson left with what Brown called an ankle injury with 1:04 left and did not return. Brown said he kept him out for precautionary reasons and said the injury is “not anything serious.”
