Bussard goes 5 for 5, but 15 walks, 5 errors costly in loss to Fairfield

Fairfield 17, Tippecanoe Valley 12 (Saturday): Dalynne Bussard went 5 for 5 and broke Mariah Benzing’s school career hit record, and KC Shriver added three hits and three runs scored, but host Valley lost to sectional rival Fairfield Saturday.

Bussard had a homer and four singles, and Temperance Caudill also homered.

Malaynie Costello and Caudill each had two hits and two RBIs. Kahlyn Manns had a hit and two RBIs. Gaby Gonzalez also had two RBIs.

Kaitlyn Threlkel and Minda Shriver each had a hit and an RBI.

But Lady Viking pitchers walked 15 and committed five errors that led to 10 unearned runs.

Bussard started and pitched three innings and allowed three hits and four runs (two earned). She walked one, hit a batter and struck out four.

Costello relieved and allowed three hits and eight runs (four earned) in one inning. She walked seven and struck out none.

Minda Shriver went three innings in her first career pitching appearance and allowed two hits and five runs (one earned) with seven walks and one strikeout.

Fairfield scored eight runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 12-7 lead.

Valley would go on to beat Rochester 5-3 later in the day.
