Caston basketball briefs: Scales scores 14, but Lady Comets fall to ranked Carroll in regular season

Rudicel tallies 13, but Pioneer avenges earlier loss to Caston boys

Girls basketball

Carroll (Flora) 55, Caston 37 (Friday): Isabel Scales led visiting Caston with 14 points in a loss to Class 2A, No. 10 Carroll (Flora) Friday.

Addison Zimpleman added seven points, Maddi Smith had six, and Abby Williamson and Jordan Clingler had five each.

Scales also had a team-high seven rebounds. Smith had two steals.

Alli Harness had 20, and Megan Wagner had 15 for the Lady Cougars.

Caston has not beaten Carroll since Dec. 13, 2002.

Carroll led 19-17 at halftime.

Caston finishes the regular season 15-6. They will play Pioneer in a Class 1A, Sectional 52 quarterfinal at Tri-County at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Boys basketball

Pioneer 45, Caston 42 (Friday): Bryce Rudicel scored 13 points, but the Comets lost to host Pioneer in a Hoosier North game Friday.

Joey Spin added eight points, Kade Zeider had seven, and Cam Kline had six.

Caston led 24-22 at halftime.

Pioneer won despite making just 5 of 13 free throws.

Pioneer avenged a 50-32 loss to Caston at the Cass County Invitational on Dec. 2.

Caston has not beaten Pioneer on the road since Jan. 28, 2005.

Caston fell to 2-2 in conference play. Pioneer improved to 1-2.

The teams could meet again at the Tri-County sectional from March 2-6.

Caston will host Northfield at 3:30 p.m./5 p.m. (JV/Varsity) on Saturday. Pioneer will travel to Rossville at 1 p.m./2:30 p.m. (JV/Varsity) on Saturday.
