Caston’s Oaf is top area boys strider, but season ends at Brownsburg regional

Girls: Season ends for Pioneer’s fast frosh, Caston’s Rogers

Cross-country

Pioneer’s fast freshman Brylie Caudle and Jolene Kennell and Caston junior Hannah Rogers had their respective seasons end at the Brownsburg regional Saturday.

Caudle finished 117th in a field of 238 runners in 21:26. Kennell was just behind in 120th place in 21:32.

Rogers placed 150th in 22:03.

The cutoff for the 15th individual on a non-advancing team was 19:14.

Carmel won the regional with 53 points. Avon (76), Zionsville (80), Heritage Christian (139) and Brownsburg (201) also advanced to state.

Terre Haute North’s Addyson Bautista was the individual champion in 16:32.

In the boys meet, the fastest area runner was Caston junior Daulton Oaf, who ran a 17:40 and finished in 151st place in a field of 245 runners. Fellow Comet junior Malakai Clayton was just behind in 168th place in 17:50.

As for Pioneer, junior Eli Hines took 219th place in 19:11.

Senior Dane Bowditch was not listed among the runners. In a reply to an email from RTC asking for clarification, Pioneer coach Gavin Cottingham said that Bowditch did run but that his timing chip did not register. Cottingham added that there is video evidence of Bowditch crossing the finish line in 18:44, which would have put him in 208th place.

That time would have been approximately 1:20 slower than his sectional time at Logansport the previous week.

“He wasn’t at his best form as he is still dealing with the head cold, congestion, and cough that has plagued him all season,” Cottingham said.

Carmel won the boys team title with 45 points. Brownsburg (78), Harrison (West Lafayette) (130), Avon (131) and North Central (Indianapolis) (139) also advanced to state.

Carmel’s Lucas Bartlett beat out teammate Jonah Kaul for the individual title in 15:02.

The cutoff for the 15th and final individual spot at state was 16:01.
