Softball

Caston’s Addison Zimpleman, Isabel Scales, Kinzie Mollenkopf, Macee Hinderlider, Maddi Smith and Annie Harsh were all named first-team all-Hoosier North in voting done by the conference’s coaches and released to the media.

In addition, freshman teammate Makena Middleton was named honorable mention all-Hoosier North.

Zimpleman, a sophomore pitcher-second baseman, hit .573 with 12 homers and 26 RBIs. She also went 7-2 with a 1.26 ERA with 68 strikeouts in 61 ⅓ innings in the circle.

Scales, a sophomore catcher, hit .566 with nine homers and 35 RBIs.

Mollenkopf, a junior pitcher second-second baseman, went 11-2 with a 2.34 ERA with 131 strikeouts in 83 ⅔ innings. She also hit .404 with four homers and 24 RBIs.

Hinderlider, a sophomore third baseman, hit .387 with 24 RBIs and 11 stolen bases.

Smith, a senior shortstop-outfielder, hit .423 with two homers and 23 RBIs and 11 stolen bases.

Harsh, a sophomore first baseman, hit .371 with one homer and 17 RBIs.

Middleton hit .246 with three homers and 20 RBIs.

Caston 16, Argos 1 (5 innings, May 14): Addison Zimpleman had a double and a homer among her four hits and also had two RBIs, and Kinzie Mollenkopf also had four hits and two RBIs for the visiting Lady Comets in a rout over Argos on May 14.

Maddi Smith and Bailey Harness added three hits each. Smith had three RBIs, and Harness also had an RBI. Makena Middleton had a hit and two RBIs, and Haley Logan and Macee Hinderlider each had a hit and an RBI.

Caston had 19 hits, eight of which went for extra bases. They also received five walks.

Mollenkopf pitched a six-hitter with no walks and seven strikeouts in the circle.

Caston scored 10 runs in the fourth inning to build a 15-1 lead.

Argos committed 10 errors which led to 11 unearned runs for Caston.

Oak Hill 7, Caston 2 (May 13): Bailey Harness went 2 for 2, and Addison Zimpleman had a triple and two RBIs in the fifth inning for Caston in a home loss to Oak Hill on May 13.

Harness and Haley Logan each scored a run.

Logan and Makena Middleton each had a hit.

Zimpleman pitched a complete game in the circle, allowing 10 hits and two earned runs. She walked two and struck out seven. Caston committed three errors which led to five unearned runs for Oak Hill.

Oak Hill scored five times in the top of the seventh to break a 2-2 tie.

Kinzie Mollenkopf got the win in the circle. She threw a five-hitter with two walks and 10 strikeouts.

Caston scored six runs in the top of the first inning. They are 6-0 in conference play.

Caston 12, Knox 0 (5 innings, May 7): Isabel Scales had a pair of doubles and three RBIs, and Annie Harsh, Macee Hinderlider, Addison Zimpleman, Kinzie Mollenkopf and Haley Logan also had two hits each for the Lady Comets in a Hoosier North home win over Knox on May 7.

Harsh and Hinderlider added two RBIs each. Mollenkopf, Logan and Zimpleman each had an RBI.

Zimpleman had a double and a triple. HInderlider, Maddi Smith and Harsh each had a double.

Smith also had an RBI on senior day, as did freshman Makena Middleton. Bailey Harness also had a hit.

Mollenkopf and Zimpleman combined on a one-hit shutout. Mollenkopf pitched the first four innings and allowed one hit with no walks and seven strikeouts. Zimpleman pitched a hitless fifth with two strikeouts.

Caston scored four runs in the first and four more in the second.

Caston is 5-0 in the Hoosier North.

Isabel Scales went 3 for 3 with two singles and a double and two RBIs. Kinzie Mollenkopf had three hits and scored three runs. Annie Harsh singled and tripled and drove in three runs. Maddi Smith had two hits and two RBIs. Haley Logan and Makena Middleton had one hit each.

LaVille committed two errors which led to three unearned runs for Caston.

Caston 4, West Central 2 (April 25): Isabel Scales hit a game-tying two-run homer in the first inning, and Addison Zimpleman and Makena Middleton each had an RBI for the Lady Comets in a win over visiting West Central in a matchup between sectional rivals and top 10 teams in Class 1A on April 25.

Macee Hinderlider also had two hits, including a triple. Bailey Harness and Zimpleman each had a hit.

Addison Zimpleman allowed Kailee Bishop’s two-run homer in the first inning but blanked the Lady Trojans over the final six innings. Zimpleman pitched a four-hitter with one walk and five strikeouts.

Caston 10, Clinton Central 3 (April 23): Addison Zimpleman and Annie Harsh each homered, and Macee Hinderlider had three hits and three RBIs for the host Lady Comets in a win over Clinton Central on April 23.

Zimpleman also singled and drove in two runs. Harsh also doubled and drove in a run. Isabel Scales had two hits, and Bailey Harness and Maddi Smith each had a hit and an RBI. Kinzie Mollenkopf and Makena Middleton had one hit each.

Mollenkopf pitched a six-hitter with no walks and 14 strikeouts.

Baseball

Spin, Smith, DuVall earn all-Hoosier North honors: Caston seniors Joey Spin and Sam Smith and sophomore Pete DuVall were all named first-team all-Hoosier North in voting done by the conference’s coaches and released to the media.

Spin, a pitcher-shortstop, hit .468 with 23 RBIs and 24 stolen bases. He also went 10-2 with a 2.49 ERA with 12 walks and 79 strikeouts in 76 innings.

Smith, a catcher, hit .360 with 19 RBIs.

DuVall, a pitcher-third baseman, hit .316 with a team-high three homers. He also drove in 23 runs. He was also 7-0 with a 1.05 ERA on the mound with six walks and 36 strikeouts in 40 innings.

Caston 8, Oregon-Davis 6 (May 20): Talon Zeider, Joey Spin and Sam Smith each had a hit and two RBIs, and Pete DuVall and Edison Byrum also had singles for Caston in a home win over Oregon-Davis in their regular season finale on May 20.

Jackson Rentschler earned an RBI on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch in the second inning. Adam Rush walked three times and scored twice. Caston batters received 11 walks and were also hit by three pitches. They also stole seven bases.

Spin also pitched a six-hitter with two walks and 12 strikeouts. Caston committed four errors, and four of the runs Spin allowed were unearned.

Caston had back-to-back three-run innings in the second and third and built an 8-3 lead after four innings before holding on.

Caston 15, Triton 1 (5 innings, May 19): Pete DuVall pitched a six-hitter with no walks and five strikeouts, and he also had a single and three RBIs at the plate for the Comets in a Hoosier North home win over Triton on May 19.

Edison Byrum had two hits and two RBIs, and Caleb Stinson and Sam Smith had two hits and an RBI each. Adam Rush also had two hits.

Joey Spin had a hit and two RBIs, and Jackson Rentschler and Preston Holderfield each had a hit and an RBI. Talon Zeider went 0 for 4, but he walked, drove in a run and scored three times.

Caston scored 13 runs in the second inning to take a 14-0 lead.

Caston finished Hoosier North play 12-2, but Winamac beat North Judson to wrap up the outright conference crown at 13-1.

“Pete gave us a solid outing on the mound,” Caston coach Blake Mollenkopf said. “He had a good mix of pitches tonight. We were able to get a lot of hits and RBI production up and down the lineup.”

Jackson Rentschler, Pete DuVall and Edison Byrum each had an RBI. Talon Zeider singled, walked and scored twice. Preston Holderfield doubled and scored twice. Adam Rush singled and scored a run.

Spin also pitched a two-hit shutout. He walked none and struck out six.

Caston scored in all five innings in which they batted. They improved to 11-2 in the Hoosier North.

Stinson and Edison Byrum had three hits each from the Nos. 8-9 and spots in the Caston order. Byrum had a double and two singles and three RBIs. Talon Zeider and Pete DuVall had two hits and two RBIs each. Joey Spin singled, walked, was hit by two pitches, drove in two runs and scored four times. Jackson Rentschler had a hit and two walks and drove in two runs.

Sam Smith, Ryan Spin and Adam Rush each had a hit and an RBI, and Grant Yadon also had an RBI.

Joey Spin pitched a three-hitter with no walks and seven strikeouts.

Culver pitchers walked seven and hit six batters. Culver also committed six errors that led to nine unearned runs for Caston.

Caston scored 11 runs in the second inning and eventually led 23-0 after three innings.

Caston 6, West Central 5 (May 9): Pete DuVall singled and drove in two runs, and Noah Herd pitched 6 ⅓ innings for the win for the visiting Comets as they hung on to beat sectional rival West Central on May 9.

Adam Rush and Preston Holderfield each had a hit and an RBI. Sam Smith doubled, and Talon Zeider, Joey Spin and Herd each singled. Caleb Stinson walked three times.

West Central pitchers walked eight and also hit three batters.

Herd allowed 11 hits and five runs (four earned). He walked three, hit three batters and struck out six. Zeider got the final two outs for the save.

Caston scored three runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead and never trailed again.

Caston 6, Pioneer 3 (May 2): Pete DuVall allowed two hits over 5 ⅔ innings on the mound and also hit a solo homer at the plate for Caston in a Hoosier North road win over Pioneer on May 2.

DuVall allowed two runs (both earned) while walking three, hitting a batter and striking out three.

Joey Spin got the final four outs for the save. He allowed three hits and one earned run. He walked one and fanned one.

Sam Smith had two of Caston’s four hits – a single and a double – and an RBI, and Spin had a double, a walk and an RBI. Jackson Rentschler, Adam Rush and Caleb Stinson walked twice each. As a team, Caston received seven walks.

Caston scored three runs in the top of the first and never trailed. After Pioneer scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth, Caston responded with two runs in the seventh.

The second game in the two-game series was postponed to May 10.

Caston 7-7, North Judson 5-3 (May 7): Jackson Rentschler doubled and drove in three runs, and Sam Smith walked twice and drove in two runs for the host Comets in a 7-5 win over North Judson in the first game of a Hoosier North doubleheader on May 7.

Talon Zeider added two hits and a walk and two runs scored, and Preston Holderfield had a hit and an RBI. Caleb Stinson tripled.

Joey Spin singled and walked twice and scored a run at the plate and also got the win on the mound. He allowed seven hits and five runs (all earned) while walking two and striking out six.

Caston scored six runs in the bottom of the second and never trailed.

Caston completed the sweep with a 7-3 win in Game 2. Pete DuVall had two hits and an RBI at the plate and also pitched a nine-hitter on the mound. He allowed three runs (two earned) while walking none and fanning three.

Holderfield also had two hits and a run scored. Smith singled and drove in two runs. Rentschler had a hit and an RBI. Zeider and Stinson each contributed an RBI. Spin singled and walked twice. Edison Byrum had a hit. Grant Yadon scored two runs.

North Judson broke up DuVall’s shutout bid with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

In the doubleheader, North Judson pitchers walked 15 while Caston pitchers walked two.

“We got two solid pitching outings from Joey and Pete today,” Caston coach Blake Mollenkopf said. “They missed pitches well and were in the strike zone all day. Today was probably our best at-bats as a team on the season. We manufactured runs when we needed and came up with timely hits. … Overall pleased with the day and our guys battled to stay in the hunt for the HNAC crown.”

Winamac 15, Caston 2 (6 innings, April 29): Jackson Rentschler doubled and drove in a run, and Adam Rush singled and drove in a run for the host Comets as Winamac completed a two-game Hoosier North sweep on April 29.

Talon Zeider, Sam Smith and Ryan Spin each contributed a single.

Rentschler started and pitched the first 3 ⅔ innings and took the loss. He allowed seven hits and 11 runs (six earned) while walking one, hitting a batter and striking out one. Zeider allowed six hits and four runs (three earned) in 2 ⅓ innings of relief. He walked one and struck out one.

Caston committed eight errors that led to six unearned runs for Winamac.

Winamac led 6-0 after two innings.

Spin pitched a complete game, walked nobody and allowed no earned runs but took the loss. He allowed six hits and fanned four. Caston committed nine errors, and all seven runs Spin allowed were unearned.

The game was tied 1-1 after four innings.

Spin relieved starter Rentschler with one out in the bottom of the fifth and earned the win. In 2 ⅔ innings, he allowed two hits and a run while walking none and fanning two. Rentschler allowed one earned run in 4 ⅓ innings while allowing three hits, walking three and hitting a batter. He struck out three.

Caston trailed 2-0 after one inning but scored two runs in the top of the sixth to break a 2-2 tie.

Caston 9-12, Knox 2-5 (April 23): Jackson Rentschler had a pair of singles and four RBIs, and Joey Spin had two hits at the plate and also pitched a nine-hitter on the mound as Caston defeated Knox 9-2 in the first game of a home doubleheader on April 23.

Sam Smith had two hits and an RBI, and Pete DuVall had a single and an RBI. Talon Zeider and Preston Holderfield each had a hit and a run scored. Spin also scored three runs.

On the mound, Spin allowed two runs (none earned) while walking none and fanning eight.

Caston scored a run in the bottom of the third to take the lead for good at 3-2. They added three more in both the fifth and the sixth.

Caston also never trailed in the second game in a 12-5 win. DuVall singled, doubled twice, drove in four runs and also got the win on the mound by allowing one run over 5 1 3 innings.

Spin singled, doubled and walked twice and drove in a run. Adam Rush singled and drove in two runs. Talon Zeider and Noah Herd each had a hit and an RBI. Preston Holderfield and Edison Byrum each had a hit and a run scored. Grant Yadon scored two runs.

Knox pitchers walked eight and also hit two batters.

DuVall allowed six hits but walked none, hit a batter and struck out four. Zeider allowed two hits and four runs (three earned) over the final 1 ⅔ innings. He walked two and fanned two.

Caston led 2-1 after four innings and then added 10 runs over the final three innings. Per conference doubleheader rules, Caston was the home team in Game 1 and the visiting team in Game 2.

Knox committed six errors that led to eight unearned runs for Caston.

Boys golf

Caston shoots 409, finishes 5th in Hoosier North (May 23): The Caston boys golf team shot a 409 and finished fifth in the Hoosier North tournament at Round Barn Golf Club at Mill Creek on May 23.

Caston teammates Colby Pugh and A.J. Dague each shot 88 to earn a spot on the all-conference team.

Bailey Zimpleman added a 105, and Lucas Graham had a 128 to round out the Caston team scorecard.

Dague parred No. 1. He was the only player in the conference to not have a bogey or worse on the opening hole.

Triton won the title with a 347, topping runner-up Winamac by 29 strokes. Triton’s Cole McKinney was the medalist with a 79.

Caston ties for 7th at Hoosier North meet (May 10): The Caston girls track team scored 28 points and finished in a tie for seventh out of eight teams at the Hoosier North meet at Knox on May 10.

Delaney Strasser was fourth in the 1,600 meters, and Emma Stinson was fourth in the 100 hurdles, and they were the highest-placing Caston athletes. Kaitlyn Hutsell was sixth in the 100 meters and the 300 hurdles. Stinson was seventh in the 400. Strasser was eighth in the 800, Stevanna Young was eighth in the 3,200, and Paul was eighth in the high jump.

The team of Strasser, Ali Paul, Stinson and Kaitlyn Hutsell was third in the 4 x 400 relay.

Ali Paul scored in both the long jump and high jump, Elizabeth Pierce scored in both the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, and Delaney Strasser scored in both the 800 and 1,600 meters. Emma Stinson also scored in the 100 hurdles. Kaitlyn Hutsell and Jena Chandler both scored in the 100 meters. Tayler Shafer scored in the shot put.

Caston scores 8 points, finishes 10th at Plymouth sectional (May 19): The Caston boys track team scored eight points and finished 10th out of 11 teams at the Plymouth sectional on May 19. No Caston athletes advanced to the Goshen regional on May 26.

Garrison Hickle was the highest-placing Caston athlete, taking sixth in the discus. Joshua Sullivan was seventh in the long jump, and Austin Dague was seventh in the 3,200 meters. The 4 x 400 relay team, which consisted of Sullivan, Corbin Smith, Dague and Chase Angot, took eighth.

Caston takes 6th at Hoosier North meet at LaVille (May 12): The Caston boys track team scored 19 points and finished sixth out of eight teams at the Hoosier North meet at LaVille on May 12.

Austin Dague was the highest-placing Caston athlete, taking fourth in the 3,200 meters in 11:05.03. Garrison Hickle was fifth in the discus, Joshua Sullivan was sixth in the long jump, and Corbin Smith was seventh in the 110 hurdles.

The 4 x 400 relay, which consisted of Chase Angot, Jan Aguilar-Mendez, Smith and Dague took sixth, and the 4 x 100 relay, which consisted of Angot, Tanner Sutton, Smith and Sullivan, took seventh.

Caston takes 3rd in meet at Culver Academy (April 26): The Caston boys track team scored 22 points and placed third in a three-way meet at Culver Academy on April 26. The meet also included Tippecanoe Valley.

Garrison Hickle scored in both the discus and shot put, Corbin Smith scored in both the 110 and 300 hurdles, and Austin Dague scored in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. Joshua Sullivan scored in the long jump.

The 4 x 100 relay team, which consisted of Chase Angot, Tanner Sutton, Smith and Sullivan, and the 4 x 400 relay, which consisted of Liam Wilburn, Sutton, Arrik Miller and A.J. Reyburn, also scored.

Football

Hickle brothers sign with Trine: Caston twin brothers Grant and Garrison Hickle have both signed with Trine University to continue their football and academic careers.

Garrison Hickle had 46 tackles, three sacks and three forced fumbles on defense. In a statement, the Caston athletic department said that Trine is scouting the 6-3, 295-pound Garrison as an offensive lineman.

Garrison was also Academic All-State and honorable mention all-Hoosier North.

Grant Hickle played quarterback, tight end, offensive guard and slotback on offense and linebacker and string safety on defense for Caston.

He led Caston in tackles on defense with 85 and added an interception. He also had 670 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on offense.

Grant was honorable mention all-Hoosier North in 2020.

Both Hickle brothers plan to major in criminal justice.
