Culver Academy denies Valley’s first sectional volleyball title

Costello: 50 kills in 3 sectional matches; Wagoner: 110 assists

Volleyball

Culver Academy def. Tippecanoe Valley, 25-22, 18-25, 25-19, 25-20 (Saturday): Mackaylie Costello had 19 kills, six blocks and two aces, but the Valley volleyball team lost to Culver Academy in the Class 3A, Sectional 18 final at Valley Saturday night.

Ava Smith had nine kills, Colette Blackburn had seven kills, and Emily McGriff and Avery Wagoner had three kills each.

Wagoner added five blocks, and McGriff had one block.

Wagoner had 38 assists and three aces. Sidney Nelson, Abby Koch and Blackburn also had two aces each.

Valley finished 15-14.

Culver Academy (19-14) won their third consecutive sectional title and will next play NorthWood in a Class 3A NorthWood regional semifinal on Saturday.

Valley def. Knox, 21-25, 25-8, 25-15, 28-26 (Saturday): Mackaylie Costello had a team-high 15 kills, and Ava Smith, Colette Blackburn and Emily McGriff had seven kills each for the Lady Vikings as they rallied after dropping the first set set to beat Knox in a Class 3A, Sectional 18 semifinal at Valley Saturday afternoon.

Costello added four blocks, and McGriff had two.

Avery Wagoner led with six aces. Sidney Nelson addec four aces, Emma Patrick and Blackburn added three each, and Erika Henderson and Costello added two each.

Wagoner also had 36 assists.

Valley improved to 15-13 and advanced to the sectional final and a meeting with Culver Academy. Knox finished 9-19.

Culver Academy beat Bremen 25-19, 25-15, 25-17 in the other semifinal.

Valley def. John Glenn, 26-24, 18-25, 26-24, 24-26, 15-9 (Thursday): Mackaylie Costello had 16 kills and seven blocks to lead Valley past John Glenn in a Class 3A, Sectional 18 quarterfinal at Valley Thursday.

Ava Smith added 10 kills, Colette Blackburn added five, and Sidney Nelson and Emily McGriff had two each.

McGriff had three blocks, Smith had two and Wagoner had one.

Wagoner had 36 assists.

Costello, Blackburn, Nelson, Wagoner, Patrick and Henderson had one ace each.

Valley improved to 14-13 and will meet Knox, who received a bye, in the semifinals at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

John Glenn finished 10-19.
