Culver beats West Central again, will play Argos next

Girls basketball

Culver 60, West Central 36 (Tuesday): The Culver girls basketball team went on a pair of 7-0 runs in the first quarter and cruised to a wire-to-wire win over West Central in a Class 1A, Sectional 50 quarterfinal at Oregon-Davis Tuesday.

Culver led 17-5 after one quarter and 28-15 at halftime.

They extended the lead to 44-22 after three quarters.

The 60 points Culver scored were the most they have scored in a postseason game since a 69-30 win over Castron in 2003.

Culver has won the last six meetings against West Central and knocked the Lady Trojans out of the sectional each of the last two years.

Culver will play Argos, who received a bye, in the semifinals at 8 p.m. Eastern Friday. Culver lost to Argos 41-26 in their regular season meeting.

In Tuesday’s other quarterfinal, Triton eliminated defending sectional champion Oregon-Davis 56-41. Triton will face LaCrosse in the first quarterfinal at 6 p.m. Eastern Friday.

Boys basketball

Trinity Greenlawn 31, Culver 25 (Tuesday): Owen Clingler scored 14 points, but the visiting Cavaliers lost to Trinity Greenlawn Tuesday.

Jalen King and Auston Zehner had four points each, Marquez Anderson had two, and Braxton Conley had one.

George Aranowski had 13 points, and Jacob Palmer had eight for Trinity Greenlawn.

Coached by former Lakeland Christian boys coach and Caston girls coach Joel Burrus, Trinity Greenlawn is second in the state in defensive scoring average behind Rochester (38.3 ppg).

Culver led 18-14 at halftime and 23-22 after three quarters.
