Culver winter sports year in review

Boys basketball

Bremen 49, Culver 36 (Feb. 25): Jalen King and Auston Zehner had 11 points each for Culver in a home loss to Bremen on Feb. 25 in their regular season finale.

Emiliano Ortiz added five points, Marquez Anderson had four, and Ethan Keller had two for the Cavaliers (6-15).

Carson Miller had 26 points for Bremen.

Bremen led 24-9 at halftime.

Northfield 35, Culver 32 (Feb. 22): Mason Herbert scored 13 points for Culver in a home loss to Northfield on Feb. 22. Auston Zehner added eight, Shane Shuman had six, and Emiliano Ortiz had five.

Northfield led 18-17 at halftime and extended their lead to 29-23 after three quarters.

Culver fell to 6-14.

Culver 58, LaCrosse 29 (Feb. 19): Shane Shuman scored 16 points, and Auston Zehner added 12 as the visiting Cavaliers routed sectional rival LaCrosse on Feb. 19.

Marquez Anderson added nine points, Mason Herbert had six, Ethan Keller and Emiliano Ortiz had five each, Joey Pizur and Oliver Morgan had two each, and Jalen King had one.

Culver led 27-14 at halftime and extended the lead to 47-22 after three quarters.

Culver (6-13) held LaCrosse leading scorer Ben Garwood to one point.

Culver 41, South Central (Union Mills) 40 (Feb. 18): Emiliano Ortiz’s game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer – they were his only three points of the game – gave the Cavaliers a road win over South Central on Feb. 18.

Marquez Anderson and Shane Shuman had 10 points each to lead Culver (5-13). Mason Herbert added seven, Auston Zehner had six, Joey Pizur also had three points, and Ethan Keller had two.

Culver led 21-17, but South Central rallied to take a 35-32 lead after three quarters.

North Judson 36, Culver 22 (Feb. 15): Marquez Anderson and Mason Herbert scored six points each for Culver in a Hoosier North road loss to North Judson on Feb. 15.

Emiliano Ortiz had four points, Shane Shuman had three, Jalen King had two, and Auston Zehner had one.

Ty Schumacher led North Judson with 10 points.

North Judson led 19-12 at halftime.

Culver 44, Pioneer 40 (Feb. 11): Mason Herbert scored 11 points, and Jalen King had 10 for Culver in a home conference win over Pioneer on Feb. 11.

Ethan Keller and Marquez Anderson had six each, Joey Pizur had five, Auston Zehner had four, and Shane Shuman had two.

Drew McKaig had 12 for Pioneer in the loss.

Culver led 19-14 at halftime.

Culver broke a nine-game losing streak and improved to 4-12, 2-4.

John Glenn 64, Culver 46 (Jan. 18): Emiliano Ortiz scored 15 points, and Jalen King had 10 for Culver in a home loss to John Glenn in the Bi-County Tournament quarterfinals at John R. Nelson Gymnasium on Jan. 18.

Shane Shuman contributed eight points, Marquez Anderson had six, Mason Herbert had five, and Ethan Keller had two.

Silas Kaser and Brycen Hannah scored 18 points each to lead Class 3A, No. 2 John Glenn.

John Glenn led 34-27 at halftime.

Triton 60, Culver 34 (Jan. 14): Emiliano Ortiz scored 11 points for the host Cavaliers in a loss to conference and sectional rival Triton on Jan. 14.

Mason Herbert and Auston Zehner scored eight each, Jalen King had three, and Ethan Keller and Shane Shuman had two each.

Ashton Oviedo and Tyson Yates led Triton with 16 points each. Triton led 25-18 at halftime.

Beau Brandt scored a game-high 11 points for Winamac, who led 18-12 at halftime.

Culver 64, Covenant Christian (DeMotte) 55 (Dec. 10): Jalen King led three players in double figures with 17 points for the visiting Cavaliers in a win over Covenant Christian on Dec. 10.

Mason Herbert added 13 points, and Emiliano Ortiz added 10 for Culver. Marquez Anderson had eight, Joey Pizur had five, Shane Shuman had five, Ethan Keller had four, and Auston Zehner had two.

Culver (2-3) led 31-19 at halftime.

North Miami 61, Culver 46 (Dec. 7): Mason Herbert scored 14 points, and Marquez Anderson added 11 for Culver in a road loss to North Miami on Dec. 7.

Emiliano Ortiz added eight, and Jalen King had five.

Landen Hunt led North Miami with 17 points. Patriks Reimanis and Keagan Donaldson had 13 each, and Braden Burns had 10.

Culver led 14-3 after one quarter, but North Miami rallied to take a 24-20 halftime lead.

Lakeland Christian 54, Culver 51 (Dec. 3): Mason Herbert scored 14 points, and Emiliano Ortiz added 13 for Culver in a home loss to Lakeland Christian at John R. Nelson Gymnasium on Dec. 3.

Jalen King added eight, Shane Shuman added six, Ethan Keller had four, and Marquez Anderson and Auston Zehner had three each for Culver (1-2).

Seth Martin had 22 points for Lakeland Christian, who led 25-23 at halftime. The game was tied 35-35 after three quarters.

Culver 80, West Central 31 (Nov. 30): Emiliano Ortiz outscored the entire West Central team with 32 points, and the Culver boys basketball team earned their first win of the season over host West Central on Nov. 30.

Mason Herbert scored 14 points; Jalen King had 11; Ethan Keller, Joey Pizur and Marquez Anderson had five each; Shane Shuman and Steven Pugh had three each; and Auston Zehner had two points and grabbed 17 rebounds.

Culver (1-1) led 42-14 at halftime.

Girls basketball

LaVille 46, Culver 27 (Jan. 29): Rose Peterson hit four 3-pointers and scored 14 points for Culver in a loss to host LaVille in the Lady Cavs’ regular season finale on Jan. 29.

Lizzie Pugh had three points and a team-high six rebounds.

LaVille held Culver scoreless in the second quarter in building a 20-5 halftime lead.

Culver finished 0-7 in Hoosier North play; LaVille finished 1-6 and broke a 13-game conference losing streak.

Peterson knocked down four 3-pointers and made 11 of 13 free throws. Peterson made more free throws than the entire Lakeland Christian team (9).

Grace Sieber had a team-high four assists to go along with her seven points. Peterson and freshman Livi Overmyer had five rebounds each.

Culver trailed 20-11 after one quarter but held Lakeland Christian to three points in the second quarter.

Argos had a 42-28 rebounding advantage, and they also made more free throws (17) than Culver attempted (10).

Argos led 24-19 at halftime.

Bella Stults had 17 points and 11 rebounds for Argos. Samantha Redinger had 13.
